Had a Mk7.5 GTI Performance up until a month ago. Picking up an 8 R 20 years on Saturday, really nice car at a good price. I like some of the upgrades on this car, the new wheels look great in black IMO, I imagine they are going to be expensive, so expect a heavily optioned 8.5 R to be over £60k?

I think that's true for a lot of people.

My Megane 280 Cup is now 6 years old, I suspect in normal times I would have swapped it at the 4 year point, but then they stopped offering it with a manual, and then stopped making it all together. Similar classes of car, such as this, or the Type R and over 10k more than I paid back in 2018.

The big thing for me is, like lots of people after lockdown, I'm not in an office everyday anymore, and much of my work has been remote, so my need for a daily isn't that great, so there's really no rush to replace it.

I suspect I'll go electric at some point, but I think it's still a few years away.
I'm in a similar position, only my 3-door Golf R Mk7 is now 10 years old. But you can't get a 3-door any more and, frankly, my Mk7 does absolutely everything that I want and I feel no need to change so why should I? It's utterly reliable, it's still low mileage, and not really fussed about being seen in a new car.

I too may go electric at some point. I'm actually toying (no pun intended) with getting a Citroen Ami to pop down to the shops in to keep the engine wear off the Golf. So if I did then I would own both a Golf and a golf cart. hehe

(I'd actually really like a Microlino but they are way more money than I would want to spend)

Still no heated / climate windscreen?

They had this for a time on the Mk 7 but seem to have dropped it now. It's awesome on my 2016 Skoda Superb.
Wow, really? But it's such a brilliant feature, especially when paired with heated seats. Why would they remove that as an option? confused

Well, quite.

Look at the Rover V8 or Rolls-Royce–Bentley L-series V8. Now that's longevity. smile

Seeing body colour on the inside of the doors was fine on a Polo when they cost £15k. It's not fine now they're £30k. It's an abuse on the senses in a Golf at £50k.

An, 'acoustic statement', that statement meaning, 'I'm a bell end'.

Ironically it's a decent enough looking car, all of the Golf-Rs are, they're generally inoffensive to look at and I'm sure a good drive too but the image and how often I've seen them driven badly puts me right off. I suspect like many a fast car in the past.
Spot on.

I'm probably the target demographic for one of these (long history of owning Golfs, looking for a fast car with a good size boot) but the image of the Golf R means I'll never own one.
Unfortunately the Golf-R is the modern day version of the Subaru Impreza 20 years ago. Tarnished with that 'yob' brush when they're perfectly good cars.

Admittedly I've always perferred the left field kinds of cars even back in the 00's I preferred a RenaultSport when they weren't the 'in' cars until the 182/R26 appeared.

There's been a few cars in this camp sadly. I think the C63 spent a couple of years but running costs probably saw an end to that fairly quickly. Golf R, older A45 Mercs and some of the fast Audis. Stuff with semi normal running costs that are fast seem to be the little rude boys wet dream.

I suppose if you're the kind of person who gives a st about "image" and what others think of you, then fair enough.

Personally I drive cars for myself and not other people.

“ Volkswagen reckons it has also ‘further developed to enhance the acoustic feedback and the characteristic motorsport feeling of the Golf R’ and says backfire can be heard from engine speeds of just 2,500rpm, which ought to delight the neighbours. You can even induce the engine to start at that speed by holding down the start button for 1.5 seconds (without the brake) and then pushing the brake pedal to start it. VW says this will be accompanied by an ‘acoustic statement – a deep burbling sound’. Again, to the collective delight of the neighbourhood. @

Oh do fk off VW.

I've had a 2016 Golf R as my second car for the last 3 years. Sadly I see more "young guns" driving them locally...I am keeping it purely as the mileage is relatively low for its age. On the relatively rare occasion I drive it, I always end up thinking, "this is pretty fast", compared to my work daily, but I never turn the exhausts up to a bit louder as I feel like a douche in a midlife crisis if I did. It's a good car but I am over 2.0 litre fast fours as they just don't do it for me anymore as where a few years ago I had to have this sort of car. It is fast on my local B road I will give it that - very fast. All things considered, I won't be buying this latest version, just not interested enough. However, when electric fully takes hold, mine may well seem a lot more compelling which is what I am hoping for.

But you feel compelled to come on here and tell us how little you care? I suspect image is hugely important to you. I also suspect you are earnest, vain, and superficial.

I felt compelled to come on here? You mean I made a reply to a post whilst I was in the thread having already posted several times.

And, you would suspect incorrectly.

Also, this is your only post on this thread. Great contribution! Did you "feel compelled to come on here" just to stpost? wink

I don’t think this has spilled over into the Mk8 R, in fact, you rarely see them, well I don’t.

Surely the people who care about image are the ones refusing to drive certain cars entirely because of how they will look rather than the people who just drive what they like?

I have had mine just over year it was second hand
I have been very happy with it it is a jack of trades and it is faster than the figures say
It has had some issues but all covered by warranty
What I say to people is go for test drive and see for an everyday car it is very good on a run it holds its own so a good package
There always going to be critics who have never driven it but with updated 4 wheel drive system it is good fun to drive in all weathers

I think that there is a much wider issue here than which version of Golf R you have. On a whole range of variables cars have got worse over the last few years. Combined with tighter financial times and the uncertainty around the move to electric then a lot of people are keeping their cars longer. I have a 7.5 R wagon without a GPF, without a huge stuck on central screen, without lane assist and in a colour I like from the much wider range they used to offer. Why should I change for an inferior car in my eyes?
Because you do not have the money?

Depends how you define how you use your money. I've got a few other cars so mileage is spread, less than 40k on my R so still a fresh car. It might be to do with getting old but each new iteration of a favourite car seems to offer less in my eyes. I think that is largely due to the regulators boxing manufacturers further into a corner each time. I guess we are all treading water as we wait for BEVs to takeover.
