It’s just not worth having anything nice
The thing is to have something ‘nice’ that this lot don’t want.
Just requires a bit of imagination.

Same. I think some people conflate 'nice' with 'expensive'. Plenty of 'nice' areas where you don't live in constant fear of crime. Plenty of 'expensive' areas where you do.
This 100%... Makes me laugh the people suggesting car jacking/robberies are prevalent everywhere - They aren't, Ive had an SVR, multiple RR sports, Vogues, BMW, Audis etc etc but never once had anyone try to steal them or jack me and I live in a village outside of Liverpool!

Worth reading the link I posted before. It's not all about repeating the signal any more, sometimes they are injecting straight onto the CAN bus
Interesting read, thanks for posting.

It happens a lot on PH.

A certain demographic of the form dislike it when anyone does something that they wouldn’t do themselves.

why are S/RS targeted more than (say) AMG?

It is because Mercedes are perceived as a bit "old man"

I say this as a C63 owner

Definitely so.

Wait until you have to deal with an insurance companies' loss adjuster after you have both cars stolen. Not only do they try to argue the car isn't worth anywhere near it's valuation THE INSURANCE COMPANY OFFERED at the time you took the cover, they also enter into a game of deliberately delaying payment at a time when a. you have no transport so are desperate for some kind of payout, and b. you are emotionally fragile after a burglary to get the keys left you feel somewhat vulnerable. When I said I was complaining to the relevant ombudsman I was told go on then, cases can take months and you won't get any payout until it's resolved. Basically blackmail, the process needs to be much more transparent.
If you want an agreed valuation policy then buy one. Don’t whinge it isn’t one when it’s not what you purchased.

Because VAG products are more widespread. Take RS/S parts and bolt into a Polo/Golf/A3 with a 1.2 petrol or TDI.

That and they’re so much easier to drive at full pelt with zero skill and less shouty than most Merc AMG’s making them a bit more incognito and more useful for crime. I say that as someone who had owned an S3, RS5 and RS4, none of which were stolen as it happens.

When I got the X3M comp I was aware it might attract the wrong attention.

Eight months into ownership we had two lads trying to break into the house. Thankfully we had additional locks on the house. The Mrs heard them as the back door was under our bedroom.

Floodlights on immediately, panic sensor pressed to make loads of noise and chasing them out the garden with a bat.

Police came out the next day and said a number of cars have been nicked in the area recently.

I do still get looks for idiots on mountain bikes with their faces covered up, but it definitely put a bad taste in my mouth.

We have since increased out home security more cameras, motion sensors connected to cameras and floodlights oh and two dogs.

Villages - “Alderley Edge, Altrincham, Hale, Hale Barns, Poynton, and Rochdale.”
Spot the odd one out wink
Only solution is old school - fuel pump switch, starter switch, steering lock, Doberman etc.

Was it an agreed valuation policy or were you referring to the suggested figure often proposed by an insurer at the time of inception?

Much easier to drive fast, pretty much. Easier to do crime in a 600hp missile that will always go where you point it

It was a figure based on market value for my car in its current condition, suggested by the insurance company. The car was stolen two weeks after my new policy commenced and I was offered £4.5k less. After I refused to accept this absurd new valuation the loss adjuster simply refused to discuss my claim. It was extraordinary, but very illuminating as to how this part of the industry functions. The ombudsman agreed the insurance company should honour the policy valuation BTW, however I'm sure there's some windbag on here who believes he knows better. In the end out of desperation I settled for a loss of £1k value on my car...over two weeks!

Thanks for your replies guys the VAG link makes sense

I was looking at possibly getting an RS6 next but stories like this put me off

I have a W205 C63 and it barely gets a look which is great..I think I will go E63 next, I don't fancy being followed by a bunch of roadmen or having to employ Navy Seals to guard it

At the risk of being that windbag, can you clarify how this played out?

In order to use the Ombudsman you have to exhaust the insurer's complaint procedure. Assuming a week or so of arguing and you immediately initiating the formal procedure it would typically take four to eight weeks for them to tell you to go away. The Ombudsman typically takes between three and four months to give their decision.

What I don't understand is why you took a lower figure if the Ombudsman agreed with you.
