Yeah, I should have used the brakes more to leave me at under 30mph with <100m of slip-road left to join a busy motorway and no way to accelerate as there was still a car in front.If you reckon that's the safest way to manage the situation, go for it by all means.
I'm in Tenerife for a few weeks at the mo' and it's a joy to drive here.
Motorways can get silly busy for a small island but the lane discipline is exemplary.
The road surfaces are racetrack quality even in the more remote mountain areas.
Wish I had my Abarth over here but making do with a hired Peugeot 208 with it's odd little steering square

That's the problem, everyone seems to want people to drive slowly past their house Yet they want to drive quickly past everyone else's, to get where they're going
During the day I usually drive a beater so inevitably going slower. For the last week I've had to drive a succession of what most would call sports cars during the day. Any attempt to use the performance was easily frustrated so I'd stopped bothering by Friday and just drove the same way I drive the beater. I didn't see much insanely slow driving but I did see a vast majority of people driving slowiy, such that anyone from white van man to supercar driver stood out like a sore thumb. Glacial speed overtakes seem to be the norm now along with a basic level of incompetence - stupid tailgating, not indicating, being in the wrong lane, etc.
So my mini experiment seemed to indicate an overall slowing down which seemed to frustrate a significant minority of much faster drivers. Within the slow group, it remains spitefully competitive, from merge blocking to obstructing overtakes. Pretty crap all round so I will stick to my early morning and night time blasts.

I've been doing a number of late evening runs down the M6 recently and the amount of people dawdling in lane 3 or 4 is astounding.
I sit in lane 1 or 2 with cruise set to 76 and sail past clumps of morons clogging up the outer lanes doing 60-65mph. I've even had a few cases of people joining the motorway ahead of Me, moving straight into the middle/outer lane whereby I catch them and pass still in lane 1.

Cotswolds to Borders on Friday. Few really slow drivers, but at 75mph we weren't often being caught which makes quite a change, even when compared to our holiday in Cornwall 2 years ago.
What does seem to be on the rise are drivers who cut in a few feet from your bumper and then slow down. A young blonde did this several times and each time we pulled out to go past she would speed up again. I don’t think this was deliberate as she looked on a different planet, staring blankly ahead.
Those who trundle along the inside lane at 50mph though.
This resulted in HGVs filling the middle lane and the domino effect then causing long trains of cars in the outside lane. It wasn't until we got to the front that I realised why there were apparently only two active lanes.
The young chap in the Fiesta who was constantly late braking in heavy 60mph traffic because of his animated phone conversation needs his licence removed. He gathered speed on every downhill, braking at the last moment. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when he finally moved out from behind us - and then kept nattering for the next ten minutes!
Van drivers with both wrists on top of the wheel while texting weren't exactly uncommon either.

On Saturday the M25 was rather busy/stationary around J6/Clacketts/J5 so I elected to take the A25. Usual jam in the villages and I decided to do my good deed for the day by letting someone reverse out of their driveway for karma points. Obviously I must have murdered someone that morning, as karma bit me on the 'arris - the driver I'd let out proceeded at an indicated 22mph in the rest of the 30 mph, 22mph in the 40mph zone and for about 2 miles into the 50mph zone, before he proceeded to accelerate to 70mph+ and disappearing from view.

Another bloody NIMBY. 
TBF I probably wouldn't want to exceed 20 in streets like you describe - I don't when I visit my sister in her London Borough!
