Friends who have cars but are not car enthusiasts are in for a shock today. Talked to one at the weekend that lives in the zone and he didn't know what ULEZ meant when I mentioned it.

Vox Pop on LBC just now and plenty of drivers were clueless.

A lot of money is going to be made from fines over the next few weeks.

Oh, and now Insulate Britain have blocked Bishopsgate.

I've got to get out of this crazy town after 59 years.
I do not feel sorry for them, they probably voted for Khan so they deserve it. Besides, it was common knowledge this was going to happen more than a year ago now.

I do find the comments from people saying they have no idea. This has been advertised for at least 12 months in various media outlets. I've been aware of the plan for over 3 years and I don't even live in London.

I guess it's the same as the people who say they aren't consulted about things when they threw the letter away with the kebab leaflets.
But you're posting on a car forum........the people that are clueless, are likely never even been near a car forum in their lives.
A good mate of mine lives in Ealing about 400m west of the A406 boundary and changed his car last years out of neccesity as his elderly Mum lives inside the boundary on the other side of the A406 and he has to do a lot of running around for her.
At the time he told me his next door neighbour, who is utterly clueless about cars, or DIY and almost anything not asscociated with his profession of being a concert pianist wink.....also didn't known about or even understand about it, when my mate asked him if he was changing his car which wouldn't be ULEZ compliant.
It has been on tv adverts, radio adverts, news, newspapers, magazines, billboards, facebook. The only way I would let someone off was if they were in jail.

It is really frustrating that everything is against the motorist these days. Its all about cyclist, who pay nothing to use the roads (I am also a cyclist) where traffic is now at a standstill because of cycle lanes, bus lanes which take over the road and stop any traffic getting round them when the bus is stopped at a bus stop.
The increase in Residential zones for people who live in London but want the quiet of the countryside...... To top things off I cant use back roads now because of these residential zones, yet the traffic is horrendous on the main roads because the Mayor of London cant be bothered to fix Hammersmith Bridge which has caused insane disruption over the last few years. Sadly the British motorist will only grumble on forums and not do anything about it. Lets get rid of this mayor before he ruins it for everyone.
Well because there are never any decent motoring groups. Look a the many cycling groups we have in the UK that any little things do protests in London all the time.

2004 Honda s2000 2.0 - exempt..

eh?!

wonder if the issue is that the other two are imports.
She would be doing herself a favour, get rid of the other two, the S2000 is the daddy of them.

This is worth a read" There is no climate crisis" by David Craig.
An outstanding contribution to our understanding of the climate crisis
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2021
I highly recommend this book because David Craig has has avoided complex science making the book an easy read. He has concentrated on published information about the climate and the inconsistencies over the years which cannot be explained. In doing so he asks us to question our beliefs about what is really happening to the climate and the validity of the information we are given.

The most important section of the book is the discussion of the net zero carbon policies being adopted by many governments. He explains the huge cost implications for families and businesses and the implications for land use and how this will damage our energy supplies and competitiveness in the world.

No other book I have read on climate change explains the issues in such a clear way. It warns of the dangerous route we are taking and the failure of politicians to protect our interests. All adults and children who think they can save the planet by giving up fossil fuels should read this book.
You misunderstood. I HATE saying, target zero accident, zero fatalities etc. It is setting yourself up for failure. There is NO way you would have zero, this state of mind BS has to stop. No wonder we are having so many people with mental health problems because they have been sold a false life that life is perfect and rosy and we would all have some £100k type office job if we all go uni etc.

Not surprised, most of this climate BS is a farce. It is beggars belief that they are saying the country is more polluted now than the smog of the industrial age and the 50's when coal was pumping out all over the place
So let’s say we ditch the net zero target etc, what solutions do you geniuses propose once the finite source of energy you want to use runs out? Breed cull and decompose some more dinosaurs over a few million years maybe?

my sister has got less than no interest in cars and she's been fully aware of the ULEZ situation for quite some time. Interestingly her road is not in the congestion zone, amusingly it's a one-way street the only way to enter it is.... via the ULEZ rofl
That is funny...........but not untypical now in London.
As a born and bred Londoner that spent the first 55 years of his life living and working in London, I'm so glad I GTFO of London a few years ago.
I miss what it was, but don't miss what it has now become.

Her other half can't use a bike (or even the bus) to get to work (as I've heard some fkwits suggest on LBC) as he's a builder and needs to carry his various tools. Ditto friends of his who are in associated trades....
Yep.
A mate who still lives in outer London, and is now a plumber, worked for a firm for a couple of years, who had a contract for a number of housing association places in central London, and was expected to travel around to jobs on the bus and Tube dragging a heavy wheeled tool-box with him......
After 6 months he said fk that, and left and found another job.

I suppose that, everything else being equal, if you approach the Ace along the North Circ. in a non compliant car from the West there'd be no charge while coming fom the east you would be charged as technically the slip road and fly- over are just within the zone.

Of course, driving home again.....
Not sure what you mean

The A406 is the boundary so if you approach from East you're already in it
The North circ itself is not within the zone.

If I drive along the 406 to the Ace from Finchley I won't be in the zone until I take the slip road to the flyover by the Ace.

I can drive from my house in Richmond along the North circ to the Ace without entering the zone at all.

Khan is 'Eastist" !
Just heard from someone who attended last night's Porsche meet at The Ace.

The A406 slip roads and flyover are outside the ULEZ. However, the petrol station on the corner is inside.

Carry on.

Well, quite. I mean N5, that’s a bit, well, suburban isn’t it?

London is a dump, and if I didn’t have the good fortune to earn my living there, I’d sell my house (N1, off street parking for 5 cars) in a flash. As it is, I drive in late on Sunday night, do a few days in the office and head out again. Living in the country with a sensible acre-age is vastly better. Lockdown was great (other than the pub being closed).
Sell that, buy the rest of the countryside and retire! HTH biggrin

Transport in London used to be based on horse drawn vehicles, Steam engines, and coal fired heating, so it was up to its neck in horse sh*t, flies, soot, and smoke. Then people changed to the much cleaner forms of transport, which included motor vehicles, and electric trains, but the hundreds of thousand of dwellings, and other buildings continued to churn out huge volumes of smoke, and other gases. Any major city which crams hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people into a relatively small space has historically always been, is still, and is likely to remain a dirty sh*thole (just like a lot of London still is now) If people want to live there that is fine, but jumping into a cesspit, and then complaining about the smell of sh*t, is not very progressive.
With all the dwellings, restaurants, businesses, take away`s, etc crammed into a small area London and places with similar demographics, are likely to remain a polluted hole for the foreseeable future. As the old saying goes, lie down with dogs and you cannot be surprised if you get fleas.
I was born, grew up, and worked there for decades, but remember the sheer joy of getting out of the place for good.
I love the bitter posts from people who didn’t make it and had to move away.

I don’t think you get them for any other geographic area.
I was born there, grew up there, and worked there for far longer than I wanted to. Even as a young kid, I thought it was a dirty overcrowded sh*thole, and having gone back there recently, for a family funeral, nothing has changed. Still it wouldn't do for us all to like / dislike the same things.

Interesting point - I can see people living within the ULEZ having to pay more for tradesmen to fix heating, plumbing, etc. so it doesn't just affect their personal car choices.
Trades have charged a surcharge for CC for years. ULEZ will obviously now be added. It can be a nice bonus for them if doing more than one job in a day.

In the 1960s, the Euston Square underpass was constructed specifically to improve the flow of traffic along the inner ring road (A501). It provided two lanes in each direction.

It has recently been reduced to one lane for cars, with a cycle lane alongside. The cycle lane is rarely used as cyclists understandably prefer to travel at street level than below, and are more likely to use the junctions that the underpass avoids.

Where two lanes becomes one causes congestion, which is used to justify further 'traffic reduction' meddling and charging to use roads.

Waze et al now often determines that to travel from M4/M40 (west of London) to City or Docklands, the quickest route is clockwise around M25 to approach from M11/A12/13 (east of London), which is an extra 35 miles!! I bet the planners haven't considered the extra pollution that their plans are causing.

The underpass cycle lane was only very briefly a cycle lane - since then, it’s just been a coned-off lane used to store tramp’s bedding etc.

Seems to be plenty of non-compliant cars around my area (expanded ULEZ). It looks like TFL will be issuing a crazy number of fines in the coming weeks and months.

Just had to swap my 2002 V70 2.4SE , for a 2008 BMW 330i to avoid the ULEZ in Birmingham, which appears to be one of the strictest, strange thing is the same Volvo a year later is exempt?
