This thread has made me look at Autotrader. Some Mk1 cars are up for what the owner must have paid. Around £32k with a couple of thousand miles but one is up for £41k with only 8 miles, kept in a heated garage.

After securing a Duster biggrin new for £10500 in 2021 and selling it 3 years later for £9300 with 18,000 on the clock, it made me stomach paying £25k for a new 695 Abarth Competizione, but £40k odd for Yaris hot hatch.

I paid £33k for a new Mustang GT in 2016, a bargain but a lot of money to me. I think they are £55k now. Car prices are nuts, especially as I'm on exactly the same money now that I was on in 2016 laugh
GR Yaris prices hold up because they are utterly superb cars. If you want one, you have to pay good money. At the same time there are dozens of cars which have depreciated massively. They just aren't as good at what the GRY does. I can't think of any time when the best car in its category drops in value to the same price as its supposed competitors, at least when the cars are nearly new. You also have to factor in things other competitors can't match, such as 10 year warranty. Scabby old Renaults are available for 25% the money and, according to owners, 90% or more of the ability, so there's your answer. wink

£44K is a fair chunk but as you say, all new RRPs are a bit daft. The focus has been deftly switched to get you to focus on the monthly payments and even to own just a bit of the car iyswim. Then you can say you drive a £XX! car which does seem to be considered a bit of a bragging right by some people.

The wheelbase thing surprised me, thought a F56 Jcw was short but even that is 2495mm.
It is fascinating how a lot of us automatically think small car/short wheelbase. I know I certainly do. I guess that is because we see stuff like the Mini/Yaris as little shopping/city cars as a general rule.

I loved my F56 Cooper S, but it always felt cramped/small in comparison to most of the other cars I've had. That did make it a great thing to throw down a B road I thought though. I even squeezed the 4 of us in it for a couple of weekends away in Blackpool too. However my missus and kids did nothing but moan about that though, and I guess that we are a bit spoilt nowadays with much bigger cars in comparison.

Have put the order in for a manual one in red Scarlet Flare. No idea when it's likely to turn up.

Is it just me or is that dash/cockpit 'hideous' - take the screens away and it looks like a small 80's French hatchback or maybe an old Rover.

Honestly, if you are bothered about the appearance of the interior, you really don't "get" the GRY
I have a Mk1, it has an interior "that works" albeit somewhat plain - I don't give a monkeys !

It's so much fun on small A/B roads. It's almost unbelievably good in the wet
It works to commute in, to go shopping, it's tolerable on a long journey
It has a 10 year warranty
and then if you chose to do so (with warranty cover for 3 / 5 years depending on when the car was sold) it laps race tracks fast enough to overtake most "track day" cars and most exotica up to £100,000 and many beyond

PS - and the driving position of the Mk1 and the "letter box" view has never bothered me - I dont want or need to look where the view is limited
PPS - I am totally happy with my Mk1, I probably will upgrade to a Mk2 at some point but having entered the ballot and not got an allocation I am in no way upset, I'll just wait for a later year or buy 2nd hand in a few years time when things settle down

Spot on, I have a MK1 that I bought last September and on my local backroads it is superb. I like the high driving position because when I drove the same roads in my highly modified VX220 Turbo I was somewhat overcautious about forward visibility due to sitting so low.
I'm fortunate enough to also own a Lexus RCF with a monster of a 5 litre V8 N/A engine and switching between the two makes you realise how 'lively' the GR engine is.
Although I've tried to persuade the wife to replace our ageing Yaris Hybrid with an auto MK2 (she doesn't like manuals) I'm not sure how that will pan out.
My only criticism of the dash is that bloody i'pad screen that is in every car these days, so I may in time get it removed with a single din height replacement. There is nothing quite like a GR Yaris for fun on the back roads. As I have said to many friends if you like the GR on the test drive 30 minutes on your favourite back road alone will have you absolutely loving the car.
I speak as someone who has spent a fortune modifying virtually every car I've owned but I'm keeping the GR bog standard (apart from single din conversion dashboard wise) as I think Toyota got it right first time (for me anyhow).

I think that's very unfair.

I quite like the new GRY dash, but equally I can see why others wouldn't like it.

Sure, it might well be a fantastic car to drive, but it's not unreasonable to want to like the aesthetics of the dashboard that you'll be spending your time behind.

Disliking the dashboard design is not the same thing as not "getting" what the car is all about.

Agreed. I struggle to get excited about the interior in my 370Z, but I just accept that most Japanese interiors are just pretty crap though(my S14a 200SX's interior was the same as well). So for me you don't buy a Japanese car for its interior, you buy it for the way it drives in my opinion(I loved/love the way the 200SX/370Z drive).

The problem with that...is that the interior is where you spend the most time as you say, so if it looks crap/feels cheap and nasty, then it will grate and niggle I reckon. So I'd imagine that most owners are just turning a blind eye to it like I do in the 370. I'd imagine that the owners of the GT86/GR86 do the same too.

Ok let's talk about the dashboard - it reminds me a bit of the old Saab 9000.
But you don't look at the dashboard when you are poking the throttle, or something like that.

Exactly, a decent sized rev counter that's easy to focus on is all you need. Okay if you are stuck in traffic then maybe you need a commuting car with a nice interior.

It will also boil down to how important an interior is to you as well(I actually started a thread about that). Some folk are more fussy about interiors than others I think, and I'm in the fussy camp, so I will critique interiors harshly, but we are all different/like different things though for sure.

Almost £45,000 for a supermini. Car prices are getting ridiculous.
