Was interested in this car as an eventual replacement for my Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
But I’m not interested now. Styling aimed squarely at Rudeboys and YouTubers. Horrible really. Maybe the touring will be better.

i know a lot of this is forced on OEMs by regulation, and targets. I also unlike your typical middle aged man cliche do happen to think "burning less energy" is a pretty good idea..... but despite all that, surely there is still some culpability on those OEMs for taking cars that should command absolute Athena-poster levels of desire to.... cars like these.

20 something me desperately wanted 40 something me be to be in a position to own an M5, because 20 something me had the B39 as his reference point.

40 something me would rather walk than welcome all 2.5 tons of this onto the drive.

I didn't stop loving cars, else I wouldn't be wasting my lunch break reading a car forum...!
This comment totally nailed it for me. Being in the same age range I grew up with posters of the E28, E34, E39 and even the E60 dreaming one day I'll own the latest version which would probably be even more epic. Fast forward 20 odd years and I am just not interested - fat, ugly and totally lacking character. Might need to buy the F90 whilst I still can. Gutting.
I am the same owing the V8 M3. I wouldn’t mind the previous generation M3/4 but I know I would regret selling what I have now for it and would probably only move back like many do. It’s a shame I don’t aspire to new BMWs and some of the other new cars.

What's going on with the rear door and rear wheel arch interaction?

If they made the rear arches wider, then they needed to reshape/reskin the rear doors too.

And with more space for dogs and children, while possessing the elevated driving position beloved of SUV drivers everywhere.... how could you go wrong?? biglaughbiglaughbiglaugh
And the transit would be more tax efficient for the company director types.

Loving the optimism, however misplaced it may be.

True.
But hoping an estate looks more grown up? Wishful thinking probably?

The saloon looks fine now and in a year's time nobody will care.
Three things in life are a dead cert, death, taxes and losing one's st over the look of new BMWs.

Not with your daily average post count. This forum really does seem to have been poisoned by a number of extremely desperate EV zealots of late.

As a driver's car, I'm getting the distinct impression that this new M5 gains absolutely nothing from the addition of more than of half a ton of hybrid nonsense. It's a car that the majority in the M division probably feel they had to make as a sop to legislation, rather than the natural evolution of an icon. The modern day Malaise Era is well and truly with us.

The M5 team must be embarassed by this. 2.4 tonnes is just ludicrous. A triumph of Top Trumps design-mentality over common sense and good taste.
The much derided (on its own thread) RSQ8 is lighter.

How is a Taycan Turbo not better in every way than this behemoth?

The rear passenger / cargo space in a Taycan are severely compromised by the aerodynamic body shape with it's low roofline. It's more of an 8-Series GC competitor, if anything.

I completely agree. Also the ‘driver aids’ that infuriate are becoming more intrusive.

I’m going back to 90’s cars for fun.

The new 5er is gigantic in size, and looks cheap.

Since when is CO2 poison or bad? How much is CO2 from our atmosphere?
If you accept the greenhouse gas hypothesis, are there other greenhouse gases in MUCH larger proportions in our atmosphere?
How much greenhouse gas is expelled from a vulcano eruption?

Just some puerile questions from semeone who profoundly dislikes waste, polution, and ideological manipulation.

Now back to bashing the Bayerischer Marmite Werke

The thing is we don't control volcanoes. We do control the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and livestock populations.

If you're triggered about Ev's just wait till they start pressurising people to switch to a (healthier) more plant based diet...

"just asking questions..." is one of the most pathetic way of thinking you are making anything close to a point. Come with information or walk on.
