The E34 is lovely, but I can't see it fetching £7k, when E39 540iT with similar provenance are 1/2 the money. Or maybe my "value meter" is massively off the scales...
It is punchy but you'll struggle to find an E39 540iT now for anything like 3500. If you do let me know.
It is perhaps because of the E34 age now that it is commanding a premium over the direct E39 equivilant.

The E39 is most definitely in 'barge' territory, and perhaps bargain-bucket range now, but few people looking for an everyday use car would be looking at an E34 over an E39 because of their age. E34's are in the main now bought by collectors and enthusiasts to use sparingly rather than daily; E34 ///M and Alpina prices are currently at a significant premium over E39 ///M and Alpina prices and this plays down to the lower models too.

Add to this the quite different driving experience of the E34 and E39 and they become very different propositions. Whilst the E39 was a huge leap forward in sophistication over the E34 it lacks the build quality, and the E34 driving experience is very much more old school and visceral rather than the heavily insulated and somewhat isolated experience of the E39.

This all puts them in quite different places in terms of buyer need and expectation, perhaps explaining the price differential between E39 and E34.

The E39 time (and price-rise) will come, especially with it's over-complex E60/61 successor which might struggle to be maintained by the average owner-maintainer-enthusiast, unless said owner etc ramps up his computer diagnostics and coding skills significantly.

Rose-coloured specs perhaps but I do miss my E34 540. I found it a bit flexy and very lethargic until roused by the kickdown when it still really flew, but it was still a cool thing to biff about in. Comfiest seats I think I've had (better than the 430's which were a bit flat and wide, although softer leather). Rust eventually started getting at it but what sealed it was an increasingly clunky transmission which a fluid service failed to resolve - probably because the correct spec ATF was NLA.

Lovely looking thing though. Paid £1900 for it, ran it for 5 years and chopped it in against the LS for £500. I notice it hasn't been on the road since weeping

I have an e61 550i. Its been good as gold. We've been together for almost 4 years now. Which is why I'm looking around for a replacement. I dont need to change it. Just keep getting distracted by c63 estates or even an e63 estate and anything else interesting which is estate and can produce sufficient thrust.

yes very much this.

I like the E39 very much but the E34 occupies a slightly more special place and I'd be willing to pay a little extra for a good one when compared tot the equivalent E39, and I am not a collector at all.

Afternoon Threadists,

For Mr Loon and other Cateringtin aficionados, do you have a view on whether the £15700 asking price (private sale) for this car is toppy? It is difficult to know what is a reasonable price for the myriad specs these cars come in...

Near enough identical spec to my 2nd Caterham funnily enough and imo a factory Supersport like that is a good bet.

Feel free to pm if easier as I have a very good (and trusted) Caterham contact that I have dealt with and bought from since 1998.

Love Caterhams and their residuals, my identical car that I had in 1998 I bought (and sold) for £16k thumbup

thumbup I'll get in touch.

A lack of depreciation (and dealer margin) is why a private sale appeals to me.

"Be anything you wanna be".

Stunning car!

But for £450k I'd want that exhaust sorted out!

I always bought mine from dealers tbh

Lack of depreciation offset the private sale 'risk'

Drop me a line, always happy to chat Cateringtins!

Good colour. biggrin

As you've identified, it really depends what is important to you in terms of spec. This one has 15" wheels (you might prefer 13"s), LayZBoy seats rather than buckets and looks like it might have the narrow track suspension (I'm not sure). It's also not clear whether it has an LSD (which may or may not be important for you).

I'd suggest working out what you want the car for, what are "must haves" and then checking the market to get what you want. There's always a limited selection out there, so understanding what you want helps in the search. smile

It is one of life's great mysteries as to how the long-man Jeremy fits in a Caterham. Loon, not so much (as long as he can reach the pedals).
