It's odd how there are cars like the RS6 and Golf-R which are notorious thief magnets. Yet other cars which would offer much the same as a would be getaway car and don't seem to be a worry.

I mean high end fast cars always have that theft appeal, seems for some they are stolen to order. But others used for dodgy deeds seem to be fast Audis or fast Golfs. Do AMGs and M cars get targeted in the same way and we just don't hear of it?
As someone said parts.
The amount of Golf GTI’s around
I think for getaway cars, it's AWD vs RWD, and the relative ease of going very fast in the former. The traction and general grip levels in a Golf R or an S/RS Audi are astonishing, particularly so in the wet.

When it's just about getting away and not getting caught, I would imagine these are much more attractive than anything similarly powerful, but rear wheel drive.

Imprezas and Evos were popular getaway cars back in the day for the same reason. They are very fast, very capable, and (to a point), very easy to drive quickly.
This seems correct

Plus once you know how to pinch a golf why bother with anything else and have to learn the format of how to steal another make…stick to what you know.

I owned an RS6 for 2 years, never stolen or followed. However I had an E63s stolen off the drive, likewise an Imprezza Sti V5. If I lived in Birmingham I would go for a sleeper. Car crime around here (S Cheshire) is usually conducted by gangs from Liverpool or Manchester and there's plenty of foreknowledge they're in the area (Police warnings in local paper, fb etc). In fact I've been pulled for check ups numerous times by Police checking what I'm driving wasn't stolen (S8, Range Rover, RS6 all multiple times), once they followed me home and were determined I was up to no good even though I was on my own drive - after five minutes standing in the rain at midnight I asked them if they really wouldn't mind leaving. laugh

It was explained to me that heavy AWD cars were liked especially because if cornered returning from a robbery they could smash through/past any blocking Police cars.

They use shoguns for ramming.

That’s prob why they are not targeting the GR Yaris, that and the tiny boot - but the manual would make for more enjoyable montages to a good soundtrack

However, I believe Arbarth 500s are popular as getaway cars in the big smoke - given there ability to get down narrow streets at speed.

If more GR Yaris' were auto I reckon they would be very attractive to thieves.

Coppers said to me

If it’s quick

Awd is the preference

There’s a good chance it will get nicked

Alsi someone said why not Porsches I asked this question

The golf r, rs3 and rs6 can all blend in

So if a call comes in looking for a black golf or black Audi or rs3 they blend in,

If it was a Porsche that is easy to spot as there aren’t many around

Back in the day, when I was young & foolish, I spent money on cars! Had a E60 M5
Was followed twice..
The second occasion, I was followed a long long way, a few days before Christmas
A miracle occurred.
After leaving the motorway there was a police check, looking for drunk drivers I guess. Never seen before or since.
The following car looked pretty sheepish.
I told the policeman what had happened.
When I left they was giving him & his car a real going over!

OP I think we have found a potential suspect.

Obviously your postcode is a little on the, errrr, extreme side for avoiding car crime, and in your case I’d say it’s going to work.

But in general it makes me laugh when PHers say “move house” as a response to stuff like this, as if scrotes are unable to leave the areas they come from or don’t have access to vehicles to take them to nice areas.

Not buying those people’s favourite motors would be a lot easier than moving house

Birmingham and car related crime/theft go hand in hand. West Midlands Police have given up I reckon.

OP - you've got balls alright owning an RS6 there, surprised it hasn't been nicked already in all honesty (unless you're drug dealer!)

Seriously speaking, I'd sell it, sounds like it's causing you stress. Your suspicions are most likely correct, shady looking Passat eyeing you up, should be a wake up call.

I've mostly gone straight these days. Still keep my hand in occasionally, just in case the IT game craps itself in future... wink

Does Birmingham have any redeeming features at all?
Nope. It's a big city with simultaneously none of the redeeming features of a big city, but all the bad bits amplified by a few orders of magnitude

Absolute dump.

There are lots of ways to get out; two train stations and the A38?

It’s a dump that I avoid at all costs.
