The Joy of Running an Old Shed (Vol 2)
Discussion
XC70 2.4 D5 SE Lux. Colours of a Barbour jacket, green with brown leather.
£850 but it was that cheap because it has the anti skid warning up and needs the Haldex fixing. Will be getting this done next week while it gets a new cambelt and water pump, I've got no evidence of either being done so I'm playing it safe.
Had to scrap the 01 avensis. Highly annoying. It was either the suction control valve on the injector pump, or the pump. One bit was £400, one £900. Used came up completely dry as the type of pump was only used for 1 year.
Just mot’d it last month, and £60 diesel in it. Got £350 for it, paid about £1k in 2017 and added 110k miles with very little bother or issues at all so can’t complain. Hard to get cheaper motoring.
Was just going to buy another newer one, we have a 08 1.8 tr which is fabulous and not much less juicy than the diesel……but I broke all my shed rules by buying an Audi.
Couldn’t resist, 15 years old but very low miles (35k), one genuine owner from delivery and serviced every 12 months without fail by the supplying Audi garage. They even did the belts at the book intervals. It’s a 2.0 143 tdi manual. I expect to have more bills than the Toyota but fingers crossed it gives some good service.
Crazy how something 15 years old can feel spaceship modern after spending the majority of time in older sheds.

Looks like a nice one. I'm always wary of buying very low mileage ones having had my fingers burnt more than once in the past, discovering that most of the bushes, rubber seals, tyres and brake hoses are cracked/perished from lack of use and all need replacing at substantial cost once the labour is added in. You do end up with a nice car afterwards, but you pay for it in the short term. See what the MOT throws up.

True. The old toyotas were low mile and fine, A couple of years ago I bought a mk1 mr2 with 1200 miles that sat in a garage for over 30 years. Full service and mot later and it drove absolutely spot on. I am aware german stuff may be different and it can be luck of the draw, how they were/were not garaged etc. 1000 miles done the first 2 weeks just the way things worked out with my van getting some work done, no issues yet so fingers crossed!!!

Well at almost £8,000 it's no shed. It's also still advertised, too.
Way overpriced. I'd be getting as new of a high mileage one for that budget as I could.

Shed Punto serviced over the weekend. Only takes 2.6 litres of oil. Forgot how basic these engines are. Oil and filter, plugs, air filter, coolant dropped and refilled, gearbox topped up with 200ml of oil. All in the time it would take me to do the oil/filter and fuel filter on our diesel fiesta. Need to order a cambelt kit now.

Didn't think it looked that dirty tbh, it's all legal anyway so they will only be wasting their time ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
But yeah, I do think the old girl deserves a scrub
nah keep it dirty, lets test this hypnosis the police pull over dirty cars.![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Keeping it dirty also, doesn't show up all the imperfections. Most panels on the car has a dent/scuff or scratch, all can tell a story. I dropped the ladders on top of the car the other day getting them off (they are bloody heavy!!) - left a nice shiner in the roof, not to worry though, just keep calm and carry on

My eldest is 17 in 7 weeks time so it is time to start looking for a shed for a learner driver. Having done some initial searches on eBay this seems like a difficult task and definitely the segment where you get the least amount of car for your money.
It has to be ULEZ compliant and cheap to insure, but other than that I am open to anything. I am trying to steer away from anything with a Ford Ecoboost, Peugeot/Citroen Puretech or Renault 0.9 TCE engine so that already takes out a large percentage of the available cars.
Current favourite is a Kia Picanto/Hyundai i10 after 2012/13 so it is the newer shape or a Renault Clio with the 1.2 engine. The insurance on the Clio seems high compared to the Kia/Hyundai.
Not sure I want to put her in a 107/C1 if I am perfectly honest.
Would happily increase the budget to a VW Up!/Skoda Citigo/Seat Mii but the early ones seem to rust around the filler car.
Budget is an un shed like £3K, but there seems to be little available for less than this.

Get a 2004/5ish Toyota Corolla, 1.4 petrol. Cheap insurance, immortal reliability, ULEZ compliant. Some years ago I bought a 2000 reg X-plate one before ULEZ was a big concern. My youngest is about to take it on to lean to drive in. It's brilliant. It has to be ULEZ compliant and cheap to insure, but other than that I am open to anything. Astra H 1.4 petrol, super strong cars, easy to drive, easy to fix, not prone to serious rust - probably thousands of the things for sale under £2k, let alone £3k!or, Toyota Auris VVT petrol?

Hmmmm, I have only been concentrating on small cars, I will do an insurance quote and see how much it is.I must admit I am not a fan of small cars, especially as other drivers seem to try and bully you on the road. It's OK for me as I have been driving for over 30 years and have the shed "drive into me if you like, I don't give a f

Good call.
Edited to say cheapest quote on a 2009 Astra 1.4 is £3258.11
Small car it is.
