It's Draconian... and my Alfa 166 3.0 V6 will incur the charge (in the highly unlikely event I ever drive in London).

But great to hear 40+ year old cars are exempt. Which means we'll still see all those wonderful old Bristols, Mercs, RR Silver Shadows, 60's & 70's classics etc driving around without being charged. It's always gives me great pleasure to spot such cars whenever I'm down there.

I had the thrill of seeing an iso Grifo 7-Litre driving down High Holborn a good few years ago - probably one of the most polluting cars ever, yet now exempt from pollution charge. How mad is that..???? Magnificent laugh

I ride a bike to work from just north of Bounds Green to the City. The air quality really hits you as you get near the north circ; it is atrocious, and remains so until you hit Zone 1, where it seems to improve.

I think the ULEZ charge is the wrong way to go about cleaning things up; it disproportionately affects the poor, being a fixed cost for those who don't have money to spend on a newer car.

I'm glad its come in.
Both my sister and partner have asthma.
I live just outside the Zone but have to drive into SE14 for work, as I do permanent lates and no public transport to get me home at 1am I need transport and cycling 16 miles each way doesn't appeal.
This has forced me to get rid of my 2009 Subaru Forester Diesel and lease a Seat Mii Electric which I love. Free charging at work, no ULEZ, no Road Tax, no Mot. Whats not to like about cleaning up Londons air?
Partner has a 2017 MX5 ND doesn't drive into the ULEZ zone but could as it Euro 6 compliant.
Possibly stating the obvious but the thing that's not to like is the fact you were forced to get rid of your Subaru?

I remember when driving through and into central London was easy and almost a pleasure

Driving up town and parking on the street on a Sunday for lunch or a night out, or even commuting in by car

Then, around the turn of the century you really started to notice the change as they made it deliberately harder and more restrictive, traffic calming, light phasing and road space reduction

Glad I got out when I did

I remember those days. Taking the kids up to the museums and then letting them run around Hyde Park.

They then return to a street in South Ken and you bundle them into your car to let them sleep it off whilst you have a peaceful drive back to the outer postcodes.

Throw in the parking price hikes on diesels and tge noticibly smaller parking bays and its obvious we are being manipulated.
Interesting quote on parking bays

Haven't driven in central London for years but parked up just off High St Ken for lunch last week. Car has diamond cut alloys so left a small margin of error next to kerb.

A warden watched me park then came over and politely told me I was over the drivers side white line marking the bay and he'd have to ticket me. So I had to get scarily snug to the kerb.

Car is 5 series wagon so big but not stupid

Cheers
O/T but as long as your tyre is on the line they can't do anything. If they give you a ticket it is an easy contest to void it.

Absolutely. I lived in the city for a decade and used to love hooning round zone 1 at the weekend, Sunday mornings were deserted.

It seems a bit muddled to be fair, but who really wants to drive inside the North and South Circulars these days - it's miserable!

I went to the Ace Cafe last month for a BMW Z4 meet up and hopefully will go again next year because my Z4M Coupe will be ULEZ compliant as it is Euro4, even if it is in Road Tax Band M. laugh

Even my 2002 E46 325ti would have been compliant, so some older cars are still OK.

But cars like these are probably on borrowed time.

I suppose that, everything else being equal, if you approach the Ace along the North Circ. in a non compliant car from the West there'd be no charge while coming fom the east you would be charged as technically the slip road and fly- over are just within the zone.

Of course, driving home again.....

Not sure what you mean

The A406 is the boundary so if you approach from East you're already in it

Friends who have cars but are not car enthusiasts are in for a shock today. Talked to one at the weekend that lives in the zone and he didn't know what ULEZ meant when I mentioned it.

Vox Pop on LBC just now and plenty of drivers were clueless.

A lot of money is going to be made from fines over the next few weeks.

Oh, and now Insulate Britain have blocked Bishopsgate.

I've got to get out of this crazy town after 59 years.

That sounds great, how did you go about achieving it ?
Got in touch with the manufacturer, they emailed the NOx number over to me and I sent onto TFL. Had to create a TFL account to execute the whole exemption.

TFL say they want the numbers from the manufacturer homologation department, typically not public facing. I found this team did not respond, kindly TFL accepted the email from the Public Relations team - who do deal with the public.

Took a few weeks to conclude, certificate is for life of the car now.

Good thing to point out Blib. If you are on the North Circ you are ok but even if you want to head out you still have to go into the zone to either go up or down the slip road to the roundabout.

how Has it come to this?
More taxes needed and another way to drag people down by forcing them onto public transport. There is tremendous hatred for motorists within TfL. Climate change scaremongering is now the new reason to raise taxes directly to and product costs indirectly.

Lol. Literally did this last week. Wilton Place >sw4. These things are still things you can do…

Nice and quiet on the roads this morning, mostly to do with half term I think though.

To be quite honest I don't think it will make a whole lot of difference. I commute in on my motorcycle coming from Welwyn Garden City into the city each day and if been doing a little straw pole of cars I think wouldn't comply and I counted around 10 this morning within the North circular. Fair enough this is only what's on the road on my early commute. What I would say is the signage is not exactly in your face at Henley's corner, there is a sign the North side of the 406 as you come down the A1 but that's about it (that I noticed).
Having lived in London something does have to be done, personally if they extended it to bikes I probably wouldn't change my mode of transport but I'd be forced to buy an electric Zero and make it last longer than my current bikes.

It is for bikes as well. Mainly anything pre 2007.

London insurance for bikes is crippling and why I first gave up my bike then moved outside the Circulars.

Then newer bikes in London will, not might, get stolen.

I ride a 2009 bike which is compliant but my mates 2008 Aprilia isn't.

The North circ itself is not within the zone.

If I drive along the 406 to the Ace from Finchley I won't be in the zone until I take the slip road to the flyover by the Ace.

I can drive from my house in Richmond along the North circ to the Ace without entering the zone at all.
