On-air pronunciation for commentators is more of an artform than something you can teach. It's flexible, changes frequently, and much depends on whom you are talking to. We say Paris, pronouncing the final S, but if you want to appear someone to avoid, pronounce the final S in Le Mans. I mean! As if anyone would.
What about Roma, Napoli, etc, but a soft G in Bologna is a must. Finding Florence on an Italian map is a bit like Where’s Wally. Charlie Sheen must sound a bit weird in French.
Why should we bother? I bet no French commentator says the final N in London and instead adds a DRE. Do I care?
We seem to beat ourselves up with local pronunciation. Ayers Rock doesn’t care what you call it. And Snowdon is Snowdon on lots and lots of maps.
I agree with Kyiv. The previous name was imposed by Russia. I bet that showed them.

There was a bloke who was highly respected in MotpGP comms for decades who was useless at pronouncing riders names and never corrected despite the obvious issues.
He always Mag nee cours, see he could do the cours bit but nothing else.

Always called Doohan Michael when everyone else called him Mick. Never once pronounced Criville properly or Gibernau.
He was not alone, Mury was puleld aside late on Ayrtons career and told how to pronounce Ayrtons name properly.
And as Bits we all say Mercedes, Schumacher wrong aswell.

Yes. And as it's a name it's not correct to change it's pronunciation whatever the language. A 'David' in Britain doesn't become a 'Davide' on the continent... His name is pronounced Sharl which is spelt 'Charles'.

I am one of those sad gits who is upset by incorrect pronuciation and the like . So , DC , the plural of 'Grand Prix ' is 'Grands Prix ' , pronounced ' Gron Pree' , not 'Gron Preez'. And, Tom Clarkson(and others ) , F1 is not pronounced 'Former Le One' , nor is 'Scuderia' pronounced 'Skooder- rear ' .

Derek Rae, the ESPN football commentator insists on pronouncing footballers as they would be called in their home country. And has explained quite often that in the Anglo world, journalists will decide together how to pronounce a name, usually anglicising a name - even when the player has already told them. Man Utd's Bruno Fernandes isn't Spanish, so shouldn't be pronounced that way. Similarly, Kevin De Bruyne was always pronounced incorrectly. None of the English commentators ever called their names correctly. It's just ignorant, and 'little Englanders'..
