WTF are they doing? Spa is one of the great F1 circuits.

Spa gives great racing, is a brilliant circuit.
So it has a contract until 2013, but is dropping 2028 and 2030?

They've spent money at the circuit in recent years as well.
Article says Barcelona stepping in - why, it's not a great race circuit.

Zolder is nowhere near ready for F1 racing, this is about trying to desperately appease those happy to pay Liberty millions for races that cannot fit into a calendar, I would imagtine it might happen a lot in the future.
it is a joke, but sadly the money from the East is flowing in and will only get worse, so it could easily happen that you have 30 tracks that will host races over 2 or 3 years
Nothing is sacred, not even Silverstone or Monaco, unless they have it in their contract that they can NOT be removed from the calendar to make way for other venues, Spa must have this in their contract. And have potentially been compensated as a result, they can make a huge profit from the Spa 24 and WEC to cover.

Very sad. If this marks the beginning of Spa being sidelined permanently for some soulless sandy s
thole paid for with oily sport-washing dollars, it’s nothing short of shameful.
Given the love for it I don't see it being gone completely.
Obviously I don't like it either but it's not being totally dropped. With there being more and more tracks, more and more countries to go to and drivers/teams already complaining about the number they have to do, a rotation of certain circuits each year, sort of akin to the EUGP was inevitable.
I'm not totally against moving the calendar around either, introducing some different tracks at different times of year for some unpredictability.
I do however wish Spa was a permanent fixture and that we get enough NA races that we can start switching them in and out too, rather than it just being iconic EU race tracks that miss out and us having 3+ US races per season.
Everyone is just so negative on here.
Spa has been trickling along year-to-year for ages, seemingly at risk of dropping off next year's calendar at any moment.
This announcement means we will have F1 racing at Spa until at least 2031. The circuit hasn't had any kind of certainty over this kind of timeframe since... when?

But if we’re having to rotate circuits, I’d much rather see some lifeless Tilkedrome in the desert swapped in and out instead of chipping away at the classics.

Negative? I prefer realistic. Spa has been trickling along year-to-year for ages, seemingly at risk of dropping off next year's calendar at any moment.

But fine, I’ll concede - it’s better than nothing. Like being grateful your house only partially burned down, I suppose.

I get what you’re saying, and a rotation system does seem like the most likely compromise with a bloated calendar.

The problem with Spa and some of the other historical circuits is that in comparison to the Tiikedrome circuits the facilities are average to poor. With the current owners F1 is much more about the overall experience and places like Spa and Silverstone struggle with that. The organizers almost want a weekend event where the actual racing is not the focus. But if we’re having to rotate circuits, I’d much rather see some lifeless Tilkedrome in the desert swapped in and out instead of chipping away at the classics.
