I keep seeing a lot of love lately for the V10 era and people saying bring them back.
If we are going to go old school, then surely there is only one engine to bring back... the man's engine... the V12...

The V8's were just noise, there was nothing musical about them, V10's were better, V12 is were it is at.

Each to their own put personally I think the DFV one of the greatest sounding race engines of all time.
V10s are a bit 'rose-tinted-specs'. On a demo run they sound awesome. I recall too, walking towards Silverstone on a Friday and hearing them in the distance getting all excited. And the opening lap of a race - marvellous. But after 10 laps, their appeal wore off somewhat.

Used to be able to lie in bed on a weekday and hear the cars testing.... This was back when they were allowed and someone was testing a least once a week V10s are a bit 'rose-tinted-specs'. My first Grand Prix that I attended in person was at Silverstone in 1995.
I can still remember the noise of Alesi's V12 Ferrari screaming down Hangar straight during the warm-up, which I could hear from our car as we were some distance from the circuit!
However, for me, the V12 is a bit heavy and inefficient to be truly the ultimate F1 engine
V10 is where it's at - early 2000's spec, 18k (?) redline. Awesome stuff.

If the wind was in the right direction I could also hear them from the Abbey National Staff car park in Shenley Wood, MK.
I grew up in Ampthill over in Bedfordshire, late 80's / early 90s, and you could hear the cars on GP weekend from our back garden if the prevailing wind allowed - very faint but unmistakable. Quite odd to watch the race on Grandstand with Murray commentating and hear the distant engines through the patio doors.
Brings back all the memories - almost constant helicopters overhead on race day, team stickered up minibuses in the local hotels.
First race I went to in person was 2000 (the Easter one...) and the noise of the first lap of the race was something I was not prepared...

Agree 100%. Went to all three days of the British GP back in the V10 days. First practise session I was blown away by the sounds and sensations but it got old really quickly.V10s are a bit 'rose-tinted-specs'. On a demo run they sound awesome. Absolutely! I was shooting for something a bit more modern though.V10s are a bit 'rose-tinted-specs'. On a demo run they sound awesome. The BRM V16 is even an even better suggestion.
The DFV was the first F1 engine I heard, back in 1971. It's a brutal noise , gets the attention and sounds the business but like all flat plane crank V8s it's not an attractive sound . Highlights of my listening (or what is left of it after having an eardrum punctured by a V10 Mugen) are-
- Matra V12 - a soprano shriek
- BRM V12 - grittty howl
- Ferrari flat 12 - it sounded exactly like the engine in an F1 Ferrari should do
- Honda and Renault V6 turbo 1.5. Unlike the modern turbo 1.6, these things made a splendidly sonorous bellow
- 1989 Ferrari V12 - impossibly high revving scream
- 1990 Lamborghini V12 - sounded more like a Ferrari than a Ferrari
But two special accolades - the amazing Ferrari 1512 from 1964. It has a 1500cc Flat 12 and sounds like a choir of angels .
And the best sounding engine I have ever heard - the 2005 Toyota TF105 F1 car . A 19,000 rpm V10 with a whole symphony of sounds - the V10 trademark doomy howl at high revs , but also underscored by seismic rumbles , clicks and bangs on the over run. Sadly the YouTube recordings don't even begin to replicate the trackside sound. If I heard it again I'd probably weep for joy.

Make them all rotary, just like the Mazda 787.
Nowthat made a noise to behold!
I remember hearing that for the first time years ago at the Silverstone Classic.Nowthat made a noise to behold!
An engine noise to end all engine noises.
IMO the best engine noise ever.
