Back in 1987 the performance discrepancies between the turbo and normally aspirated F1 cars was getting a bit silly. So the FIA in their wisdom devised a championship within a championship - the “Jim Clark Trophy” scoring separately within each GP for the normally aspirated cars. Alongside this the Colin Chapman award for n/a constructors.

It got me thinking - we now have a first division of 4 F1 constructors with the other 6 teams sniffing for a 9th place (maybe 8th if Perez is doing a Reutemann) finish.

So let’s say that these 6 teams are competing for the “F1B Championship”. Same scoring system as conventional F1 but no points for fastest lap and Sprint races ignored. Top 4 teams excluded.

The season so far (I’m flat out with Covid so maths may not be perfect) :

ALO. 200
HUL. 177
TSU. 161
STR. 157
RIC. 100
MAG. 99
GAS. 97
OCO. 96
ALB. 85
ZHO. 58
BOT. 43
SAR. 30

Constructors :

Aston Martin. 357
Haas. 276
RB. 261
Alpine. 193
Williams. 115
Sauber. 101

No real surprises really but does underline how Haas and Hulk in particular are outperforming their modest resources.

Regardless of the teams performance it's interesting that the top two are first and third most experienced drivers on the grid.

Experience trumps youth.

60 years ago Jim Clark won his 3rd consecutive Belgian GP.

A good day in the F1(B) championship for Aston Martin today, extending their lead in the Constructors’ championship & with Stroll moving up to 3rd in the driver’s championship. Aston still a second a lap off the pace of F1(A) cars though.

A very poor day for Haas although they hang onto 2nd in the Constructors’. RB looking slightly more competitive though as are Alpine.

A very close fight developing for 2nd in the championship between HUL, STR and TSU. Then a bunch fighting for 5th - RIC,OCO,MAG,GAS,ALB. Sauber drivers trail with just SAR behind them.

Despite all the turmoil at Alpine Pierre Gasly sensationally won the F1b race at Zandvoort yesterday, this moves him ahead of both his team mate & RIC in the championship table. Alonso finished 2nd and keeps a firm grip on the title race. Hulkenberg’s podium finish perpetuates the battle between Haas and RB for 2nd in the Constructors’ championship. Alpine remain an improving 4th overall. With determination Albon and Sargeant scraped 12 points for Williams whilst Sauber were somewhere in the North Sea.
