My favourite topic to bring up but instead of a reserve driver running in practice one in the second drivers car why not just allow a third car for the entire practice schedule?
If that really isn't possible then a separate practice session just for reserve drivers. It would make a good spectacle to showcase the talents of the future.

Money I would imagine.

Not cheap bringing another whole car just for practice.

have you seen the entourage they cart around? The top few teams could probably field a grid between themselves with the spares they carry.

Having it for European rounds they wouldn't even notice it.

If they were allowed to use the third car to try out new drivers there would be queues of next big things willing to pay for a day of practice.

A 3rd car for practice, then put them out for a sprint race 15/20 laps safety car start on Saturday.

Loads more engines, more gearboxes, more tyres, more mechanics. It will never happen. They're trying to reduce costs not increase them and trying to cover the costs with yet more pay drivers isn't going to do F1's already rubbish reputation any good.

Still remember teams having spare cars & then potentially having issues as it was set-up for their team mate not them.

then they solved it by bringing more cars!

Wernt ferrari turning up with 5 more more complete cars, main and spare race cars for both drivers, qualifying special spec car for michael, till the fia said stop?

Gather they still have cars "almost" assembled that meet the criteria of not have a full spare car ready but can be completed very quickly!

Actually miss spare cars, would have kept Danny in the race this weekend!

Pretty sure they could only jump in the spare if the race was stopped?

Or better still allow car swapping during the race like the "good old days". That way Vettel could have come in and given Kimi his car!!laughlaugh

Absolutely, I loved it when teams had a spare car they could use if they wanted to! And this could be a great way to pay for the t-car.

3 car teams were being talked about on fp 1 today. And has been a topic on youtube too.

3 car teams being talked about in the media again today, 6 cars could potentially lock out the top 6 spots, that could become 12 so the rest wouldn't get a look in, some smaller teams even cite costs of building a third car, for this I have a solution - why not use last years car for the third driver, after all it's already built and exists, will already have some degree of spares too already, could be a second or two slower than last years car and with a rookie possibly wouldn't trouble the best of the rest

What happens when the rule changes make the previous years car faster though?
