Interesting comments from Nico Rosberg. Could anyone elaborate on the Alonso politics?

In general Nico said the top teams won’t touch Alonso anymore due to his own politics behind the scenes.

I also read it was Alonso who forced McLaren to swap to Renault because he has an infinity with the manufacturer. Excuse the pun.

He also said it live on SKY in the pre race show.

Don't think anyone has ever been so open about it, not sure if he really is that bad, but there may be some truth in it who knows. They have never raced together though.

I might have posted it before but...

It has always been my impression that Ferrari eventually grew tired of Alonso's dramas and tricked him into leaving in 2014.

The 2014 Ferrari was not very good and during the late summer the Italian press were reporting that initial simulations showed that the 2015 car was even worse. Alonso was contracted to Ferrari for 2015 but exercised a performance clause in his contract to leave for McLaren. Vettel then used a performance clause in his contract to leave Red Bull (a year early).

Given the actual performance of the 2015 Ferrari, I've always thought that the stories about it being a dog were false and deliberately spread because Marchionne (who ousted di Montezemolo at the same time) wanted Alonso gone.

It was always the way with all the top drivers such as Prost, Schumacher, Senna, Piquet etc etc to do everything to get the team behind you rather than the team as a whole. These days it's a different, corporate world.

I'm pretty sure Nico "played politics" when he was driving.

It's a shame as put him in a Mercedes or a Ferrari and it would be amazing to watch.

I have to say the amount he has put up with at McLaren and sticking with it has been a surprise. I doubt many other Champions would have stuck around.

But maybe Alonso was trying to get interest again but being a team player and not just jumping ship.

Don't know but he should have pocketed a few more Championships with his talent in the car.

Just a bit...duplicitous little toad.
I still reckon he will be back in F1 at some point - certainly Mercedes should Lewis move/retire.

Alonso is a passionate balls out racer and makes no apologies for it. Refreshing in many ways. Just sucks to see him in rubbish cars, even if he is driving the wheels off them. Indycar may well be a good move for him as surely his patience with Mc F1must be paper thin by now.

I don't. I can't remember anyone who has looked so relieved to retire from F1.

Except maybe Jenson...

Once you reach a certain wealth level the rewards do not outweigh the risk or lifestyle. Drivers grow up and decide that thee is more to life Han an F1 paddock and living in hotels and simulators. However the lure of a US $ 40 million pay packet is hard to refuse even if a racer. Sadly Zak Brown is a fan boy of F1 and not a business leader of an F1 team and will do whatever Alonso wants more than bettering McLaren.

Can you clarify or justify that comment or is it just your opinion?

I find it interesting that Alsonso’s timing with teams has been horrendous and Hamilton’s has been perfect. Must be more to it.

Not a lot of sponsors on the McLaren except Kimoa which is Alonso fashion brand.

I do wish Mclaren stuck with Honda. They make the best engines in the world and will no doubt get it right. Aparantly it was the Mclaren changes that hindered Honda more.

I own a Mclaren and used to have an NSX.

Has Pistonheads become a site where we can't express an opinion?

Personally, in my opinion, I think GCH is 100% correct and Nico was a duplicitous little toad. A decent driver in the best car who could never let the reality sink in that his team mate was just that little bit better.

On the topic of Alonso, one of the greats who has never quite managed to gel a team around him enough to become the greatest. Something Schumacher excelled at IMHO.

His best days in F1 are behind him now, hence his distraction into Indy and Le Mans.

My theory is that since they both were F1 drivers' sons (champions in both instances), they felt like they had to do it without totally feeling it. Bit like working in your dads business married with kids when you really want to be a flamboyant gay painter living with your partners in SF.
