Gasly replaces Kyvat at Malaysian GP
Discussion
I didn't notice until this was announced that so far this season, Saintz has outscored Kyvat 48-4. For every point Kvyat has scored, Saintz has scored 12.
I have long wondered how Kvyat got where he was, I can only guess there was some political manoeuvring involved with Ecclestone trying to cosy up to the Russians and promote the future Russian Grand Prix.

Tbf he was iirc GP3 champion and showed promise but the pressure would’ve appeared to have got to him and he started to outdrive himself and drive into others in his desperation to reassert himself. HustleRussell said:

GP3 champion with Arden (Horner's team) in 2013 Carlos Sainz Jr was only 10th. He outscored Ricciardo when they were both at Red Bull in 2015, the year after Ricciardo had demolished Vettel at Red Bull.I have long wondered how Kvyat got where he was, I can only guess there was some political manoeuvring involved with Ecclestone trying to cosy up to the Russians and promote the future Russian Grand Prix.

Every time he's on the car radio, it's just constant moaning. It's almost as if he and Grosjean are in competition as to who is the most miserable.
Good riddance to Kvyat.
When was the last time you heard any driver say anything positive on the radio (apart from at the end of the race)? Good riddance to Kvyat.
I do like Kyvat but reckon this'll be the end of his time in F1; he had a few good races in the main RB team before being usurped by Max through no real fault of his own and he's never really recovered from that. Everyone thought that with Carlos leaving he might get a hail-mary pass for 2018 but I reckon STR will go with Gasly and another driver next year.

So Torro Rosso 2018 is Gasly and a random Japanese driver picked by Honda?
Kvvat back by race 4 perhaps..?Real shame, cant help but feel he's had a raw deal. He's not someone I'd consider on rics level but you just cant write down the out pointing, he was showing some potential before being garbaged for verstappen and seems unable to pull himself together again. Although perhaps red bull is too caustic an environment for that process, maybe hes a bit like hamilton where his biggest threat is himself.
I've long considered Kyvat a very good professional racing driver; someone who could perform well in any top series; a safe pair of hands and the ability to win the odd race or two - not necessarily championships. His time in F1 will up his stock in the US or WEC, no doubt.
I think I'm right in saying that he was never a pay driver and was retained which suggests his presence in F1 was based purely on merit.

I'm guessing Russia is a rapidly growing market for fizzy drinks. He's got more penalty points than championship points, he's probably still got the most penalty points of any driver this year with Vettel close behind him. He got moved to make room for Verstappen at Red Bull, now he's being benched to make room for Gasly coming up through Red Bull Juniors, meanwhile, Sainz moves on to Renault. Verstappen and Sainz have moved on through Toro Rosso. Kyvat has made a mess of being an F1 driver, you don't get called Torpedo for no reason, hopefully Gasly will keep the seat for the rest of the year.

It is possible that Red Bull expected Sainz to move immediately and thus offered Gasly his seat. Once Palmer made it clear he wasn't interested in vacating his seat until the end of the season, they had to go through with that decision.
