This is undoubtedly a speed oriented weekend, who'd bet against Lewis adding another pole to his current tally of 5 at this track.
That said, Ferrari have been close all year and this may be their best chance at a home win since 2010

The tyre choices:
Circuit/tyre info:
- A strong track for Merc with Lewis on pole the last 3 years
- High top speed, 222mph last year
- Average lap speed expected to be even quicker this year.
- Fastest lap ever by an F1 car on any current circuit set here in 2004 - it still stands.
This is undoubtedly a speed oriented weekend, who'd bet against Lewis adding another pole to his current tally of 5 at this track.
That said, Ferrari have been close all year and this may be their best chance at a home win since 2010

This could be a fascinating race, with a great battle for pole and the win.
I'm unaware of what effects the reduction in oil burning will bring but there were suggestions that it will hurt Merc's boost button ability.
Mind you, we've been promised such things before and Merc and LH have walked it. However, this time it might well mean a compromise in set up for the race. Merc might feel it better to go for lap times and not outright speed (or vice versa of course) and suffer the problems in the race if Vettel gets on terms.
It's a great season with Ferrari and Merc almost evenly balanced. But which is in the lead?
Could be fun.

The Cathedral of Speed
The race is always more special with the shadow of Enzo watching over it and the fanatical Tifosi atmosphere.
The best podium of the year!
- Will reliability (or lack of) come into play?
- Will the new Ferrari "Monza Special" engine be as good as the Mercedes?
- Will Juan Pablo Montoya's lap record finally be broken?
- Will Max Verstappen retire again?
- Will the Force India drivers crash into each other again?
- How short will the race be?
The race is always more special with the shadow of Enzo watching over it and the fanatical Tifosi atmosphere.
The best podium of the year!

It's a shame you can't overtake like that anymore purely because you risk destroying the tyre and therefore your race.....Derek Smith said:

The new limit only applies to new engines introduced from Monza onwards. Mercedes brought in their final ICE allocation of the year at Spa, so they can use the higher limit until the end of the season now, assuming they don't have any mechanical failures that mean they need another new unit. Ferrari still have a new ICE available, but that will now be subject to the new, lower limit.thegreenhell said:

Interesting that Merc customers, who still haven't received their final spec engine, will also be limited to the 0.9l/100km rule
Thanks for picking it up, OP!
exactly, so all Mercs engines now at 1.2l per 100km ...so about 3.6l at Monza
If Ferrari do decide to bring their final spec they'll be limited to 0.9l ...& 2.7l

There is a rule about customers being provided with same engine specs as works teams, so may be it was just an advantage at Spa for Merc?

AIUI the Mercedes team can run 1.2l for the rest of the season but Ferrari and the customer Mercedes teams have to run 0.9l Tripe Bypass said:

Only if they don't need any new engines. If they need to take a new engine (likely?), that engine will need to comply with the 0.9L rule i believe?Supersam83 said:

*Will Juan Pablo Montoya's lap record finally be broken?
Official lap record still belongs to Barrichello (1m21.046s; avg speed=159.89 mph), but I assume JPM's famous 163 mph qualifying lap. Difficult to say, as this track is one where the extra drag of these cars is supposed to really hurt the straight line speed. The fastest time at Baku 3rd sector with similar skinny wings didn't improve at all from last year to this year...so I expect only modest relative improvements from last year's pole position time. I think at qualifying, the 2017 pole position might just about match JPM's record (1m19.525s). Mid to low 19s should be doable but I won't be surprised if they don't improve massively and therefore fail to break that record. The tyres are more durable this year, so even though the race is leaning towards a firm 1-stop (looking at the tyre choices), we could see cars running closer to the qualifying pace than some other tracks, but I think the official race lap record as it stands to should be safe (even more so, if the qualifying pace doesn't break that 163mph record).
One thing I'm really enjoying about these cars is the slip streaming. Looking forward to that at this race.

Well played Merc, in that case! I can imagine the ad for Merc S-class featuring tech from F1. Where's sniff petrol when you need it?
