SKY F1 "Crofty"
Discussion
Really loving the SKY F1 coverage, really good informative stuff, Martin Brundle of course and the brilliant Pat Symonds with all the technical insights.
But please please SKY do something about the commentary with that bloke Croft...
He's driving us up the wall with his inane sometimes completely irrelevant rubbish he comes out with..
You want informative commentary instead he talks about the merits of all sorts of rubbish... sometimes about F1 too.
Where the hell did they find him...??
What is funny though is him trying to dis Anthony Davidson ... and Anthony taking the Micky out of Croft without him realising..!!
As I say great coverage ruined...
Croft gold " when I drove an F1 car blah blah lol"

I only find Croft mildly irritating.
Ted Kravitz is brilliant though. He can bang on for hours about F1 and all sorts of random stuff. He ought to be really annoying but for some reason I really enjoy his notebook and other sections they give him, he used to even do a kind of travel show at each race, showing us his hotel room and the local bars and restaurants

I hate the way David Croft commentates. Drives me up the wall. Take a fking breath, man. He's worse than James Allen ever was.
He isn't.No commentators are great, even Murray, nice guy that he is, drove me up the wall with his bks.
Compared to Legard and Allen, Croft is just a mild irritation.

It must be a more difficult job than it appears, and it appears to be very difficult. No commentators are great, even Murray, nice guy that he is, drove me up the wall with his bks.

One problem is that for many circuits the middle section of a race can be a bit bland but the commentators are there to make it exciting. I often get the feeling that if a commentator's voice goes up a couple of octaves just because a pit stop took 0.1 second longer than that of a car within five seconds I'll put my foot through the screen.
There is a distinct lack of preference in race commentators nowadays than in the old days. I liked Hunt, one of the best on screen, but he could be irritating whenever Paterese did something. In fact he could be quite viscious. I remember watching a race in America with John Watson commentating. He stuck with a prediction, that a driver would crash out in the first few laps, right up until the lap before the penultimate one.
In all the time I've been watching live F1 races I've had no particular problem with most commentators on the races, Leggard aside, but for the presentation crew, Jordan is the worst I've seen. I wouldn't say sacking's too good for him. In fact, it is just about spot on.
For the race, though, what can you say when there's no overtake on circuit?
One thing I think that would improve it, at least for me, is more coverage on who's closing on whom. If there's a purple section then tell us. Apart from that, most seem much of a muchness.

Precisely, careful what you wish for. As for crofty and to answer the first post, he originally hosted FP1/2/3 on the BBC red button along with either Ant or Karun and got many plaudits, so when Sky took over they listened to the fans and poached the whole crew but rather than limit Crofty to practice sessions and beacuse fans liked his laid back late night radio phone in approach with Ant or Karun they thought he could take that to lead commentator, I liked his style on the BBC but admit he can be a bit over powering with the lead commentary.slipstream 1985 said:

Edit: I'm muddling my crap commentators here arent I, legard was the horrific one we thought had come to save us from allen then was even worse wasnt he?For nearly all tbe time I've been watching theres always been one clown in the commentry box, I'm not sure if I'm just reconciled to that, but while he has his poor days, muddles and often struggles to follow - things you think would not meet core skill requirements - croft can't evoke the sheer fustrated rage at dithering incompetence intruding on ones enjoyment of the coverage that the pillocks above managed with monotomous regularity.
I find croft just a bit too beige for rage, although he annoys mrs hairy considerably more, although that may be partly due to him having a semi for max and the mrs being an aussie.

Crofty is a bit annoying... his shouty 'say the first thing that pops in to your head' style is better suited to the darts really. Having said that if he would just talk 10% less and allow his usually better informed co-commentators to get a word in he would be more tolerable. He is certainly not as annoying as James Allen was.

Vicious to Patrese?
As one of the most eloquent and prodigious posters here, two errors in two sentences is most unlike you. Are you well?
(Genuine question, not having a pop at you)

It wasn't Patrese, plenty others got it in the neck though

I also like Crofty, sure he says the odd daft thing but the pairing with Brindle works really well.
I have listened to the C4 commentary team in a couple of occasions and thought they were v poor.
To my mind it's the best pairing since Martin and Murray. James Allen was bloody awful, Legard nearly as bad, Coulthard not much cop.
The only common taters who I think are in the same ball park as Brundle and Crofty are the BSB guys.
