Interesting story from Alan Jones
Discussion
For all his faults, Ecclestone certainly knew how to circumvent difficult things.
As an aside, I remember that Beatrice Lola well. They used to use the Ford test track at Boreham just north of Chelmsford and remember seeing Alan Jones strolling through Chelmsford High Street one lunchtime.

Actually, it was a pretty obvious way out. For the morally bereft. If you all thought morals came into it you should stop following F1.

Dog of a chassis, criminal waste of reputedly the best turbo engine in the field. As an aside, I remember that Beatrice Lola well. They used to use the Ford test track at Boreham just north of Chelmsford and remember seeing Alan Jones strolling through Chelmsford High Street one lunchtime.
Much as I love the sport , Formula 1 lots its moral compass behind the sofa decades ago, if it ever had one to lose . Kyalami was a fixture every season until apartheid was finally abolished ,and I think we have had only two races there since.
And now we have Russia , that paragon of sporting excellence and decency .
And Dubai, where former driver, the late Mike Beuttler , would have been locked up for his sexual orientation , if someone didn't chuck him off a building first.
Or Baku , the race watched by up to two dozen locals and which , despite being east of Syria ,which was dubbed the European GP on its debut .
All thanks to the oxymoron that is (or thankfully was ) F1's 'benign dictator '

And yet you happily continue to folllow a 'sport' that gladly invites someone who allows bombing of hospitals & children on to the podium to present the trophy to the winner?

You can apply the same logic to any top line sport. Sadly. If you all thought morals came into it you should stop following F1.

Very true. It was just irksome so see some rather self righteous posters lining up to have a pop at Ecclestone when we willingly suck up to one of the worst dictators on the planet who has caused incalculable distress across so many countries. I just wish that one of the drivers would make some form of protest, but I admit I'm not sure I would have the courage to. It's likely you wouldn't have a long life afterwards. coppice said:

But don't let the truth get in the way of a good bit of prejudice eh?

I wouldn't get too excited. Don't forget we're the nation that has recently changed regimes and left utter chaos behind. Cameron and Holland removing Gaddaffi, triggering the mother of all migrations, huge loss of life, enormous misery, bloody big problem for other European nations, nought but chaos left in Libya etc etc.I'd suggest a world championships of nations without sin would be a bloody small one.

There's never been an F1 race in Dubai, so I assume you're talking about Abu Dhabi and, whilst homosexuality is technically illegal there, unless you're very openly flaunting it (the sort of thing that would be against public decency laws here too) no one will bat an eye lid and he certainly wouldn't be "chucked off a building"
But don't let the truth get in the way of a good bit of prejudice eh?
I stand corrected. In mitigation it is depressingly easy to confuse those paragons of free speech and democracy . But don't let the truth get in the way of a good bit of prejudice eh?
