This cannot be good news for Vettel and his championship chances. Whatever way they try and paint it Sassi must have had significant input into the increase in performance we have seen this year. Even if his replacement is excellent there will be ramp up time and unforeseen impacts. In a championship this close any disruption could prove costly.
They might prove me wrong but this seems like a massive own goal from Ferrari.

Could this be related to the recent oil-burn clarification from the FIA? Ferrari were reportedly the ones it was aimed at, and as head of the engine department it would have been his call to implement that strategy. Now having effectively been caught cheating, the man responsible is given the elbow.

I'd doubt it. They haven't cheated - no regulations around that currently and even now, the FIA ruling is simply a clarification of terminology. They have a habit though of ditching excellent engineers - Martinelli and Costa for example not to mention Domenicali and Allison.
