Stoffel Vandoorne, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard kart racing.

Presume this is 100% correct.

If so perhaps we need F1 drivers in Karts every weekend biggrin

Not bad, but Hamilton spending some time out for charity is better... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5moH0gXC5iQ

Lots of them have karting schools or still kart often for fun. There used to be a big one at Silverstone before the British GP and a number of events happen in Brazil with f1 drivers going.

Nando has been karting prior to the British GP in recent years (he's turned up at Daytona Sandown Park in open sessions) - this isn't marketing, just a guy who likes driving having a bit of a trundle in something safe-ish. He's a good sport and the guys who he was racing against were enjoying things a lot. He won convincingly (er - last to first in three laps?).

I've seen others in karts obviously, but usually with camera crews in tow - as part of marketing. A contact of mine runs a track and had Hammo this year along with several MB people.

Not F1 but Alex Brundle competed in a round of the DMax championship at MK earlier this year. He stuck it on pole during the 10 minute practise/quali session, but came 4th in his race, about 30-odd seconds off the leader by the end of the 1 hour Enduro. To be fair he was up against some guys who you probably don't ever want to be racing against (Chris Hackworth in particular just tends to win everything and has been doing so for years).

Also not F1 (although definitely single seaters) -- I had a trundle in a session with Adam Carroll a few years ago and he obliterated everyone (including me) in an open practise without really trying very hard. I had a chat with him after the session and he was quite self-effacing, no ego whatsoever apparent; as a consequence I had no idea who he was (other than "Adam") until one of the track staff pointed out that I shouldn't be too annoyed at being beaten given that the guy had just won the A1GP championship.

I've also been in open sessions with a few of the Stewart clan (as in, Jackie's son and a few of his grandkids), again lovely people and all round good atmosphere. It took me more than one coincidental visit to the track at the same time to realise that their team kit wasn't replica. The Goodwood stickers on one of their helmets was a clue. (I'm really bad with names and faces).

I'd like it if there was a spec series for the F1 drivers to compete in along the lines of the BMW M1's or MB E190's they used to have - something where you're not allowed to change anything mechanical and every car is set up the same so that driver talent is the main thing... but I fear it won't happen again as the teams are too protective of their drivers. Imagine if Rosberg was asked to compete in a spec race in Abu Dhabi and got into a crash, had a concussion or something and couldn't do the last F1 race?

Great post! Love reading about racers enjoying some simple Motorsport fun. I raced a DMAX special event with Coulthard and Jenson there. Was fun but to be honest; one or two of the DMAX regulars were overtaking the big names. I even heard Jenson say 'I don't remember these karts being so quick' - everyone attending assumed it'd be the regular 4 Strokes and not their fleet of 2 Strokes. Got to chat with Herbert and Brundle who were both really nice and happy to chat F1 for quite some time.

Motorsport is special in that way; how many times might you be playing footie - and a Rooney turns up and has a kick about with you?
