There are Hamilton Fanboys and there are F1 fans.
Discussion
Where have they come from?
I follow quite a few F1 streams on Facebook, and I can't believe how cringeworthy the majority of them become as soon as Hamilton or Rosberg is mentioned.
I can't think of any other F1 driver that get the same sort of fanatical, blinkered social media support. Well not in the UK anyway. The smallest hint of any criticism and you are instantly denounced as a Hamilton hater and get offensive comments directed at you - a while back when the fanboys were all saying Hamilton should leave Merc as the team was biased in Rosberg's favour, I dared suggest that Hamilton was unlikely to leave Merc for another team unless someone else develops a competitive car, as there is no way he would have won his recent championships in any other car - you'd think I'd just told them I'd been bumping uglies with their mothers.
It guess it doesn't help that Andrew Benson and the whole SkyF1 coverage is highly biased in his favour.
There was an article tonight reporting on a Spanish radio interview with Alonso discussing Hamilton as a difficult team mate - the comments were just aggressive anti-Alonso and Rosberg, but if they had actually bothered to read he article, Alonso was being compliments towards him.
I wonder if all these fanboys are frustrated Justin Bieber fans? They don't come across as knowing much about F1 - F1 wants new fans, but these ones?
Yes, Hamilton is one of the best drivers, but many of his fans are just embarrassing. Recently I've been trying to subtly take the proverbial out of them, but sometimes I want to smash the screen!

LMAO....I dunno the were some pretty deluded Vettel and Schumacher fans too. I suppose it's because of hamiltons character.,,,he's a marmite kinda guy, some people love him, some people hate him, that polarise people, which leads to attacks from the haters and responses back from the hammy chasers.....such as life these days!
I think Hamilton is one of those guys who manages to be bigger than the sport and into celebrity, Like Tiger Woods or David Beckham, so I think there are people who only follow the sport to see their man win.
But I don't think it's a new thing. As a young teenager I was a total Damon Hill fanboy and stayed up until dumb O'clock in the morning to watch Schumacher punt him off at Adelaide, then in his next season when he messed up in probably the best car on the grid I was totally blind to his failings.

Fanatics will ultimately be fanatics in exterminating who they consider as infidels and contrary to their religious beliefs. That what Popes of Rome did for 11 centuries, and the “Christians” did in the colonies, wiping out entire civilisations.
A few bad words on Facebook hardly seems extreme or new I don't understand how anyone could actually be a fan of Schumacher. By all means he was a great driver and competitor with some legendary drives, but after Hill '94, villeneuve '97, Barrichello '02 & '10, Monaco '06, who'd want to cheer that? He's like the Hillary Clinton of motorsport.
I must admit to starting this year as a Hamilton hater but I'm warming to him with every passing race. He has seemed less aloof this year and you see the normal bloke more. Things like Baku ("I'm just gonna start turning everything off and pressing all the buttons" - "Repeat Lewis, do not turn everything off") and flying past Gutierrez flipping the bird at him last weekend, he seems more like a lovable rogue this year and less of a spoiled kid.
Can I be a Hamilton fan and an F1 fan? Is such a thing possible?

this thread could be good
I agree, although people like you could be constructive on forums. Rather than baiting Hamilton fans you could show support for your favourite drivers rather than slagging off others or being utterly blinkered against Hamilton etc etc.... Motorsport forums would be much nicer places then....although you might have to find something to do with all that extra spare time then :-pYou either like him or hate him.
I happen to like the way he races, and also the stupid st he does off the racetrack is entertaining.
It's far more entertaining than some of the current crop of drivers that go home and watch Coronation Street.

The Baku exchange between him and his engineer was hilarious! Have a look here:Can I be a Hamilton fan and an F1 fan? Is such a thing possible?

From 19m45s on in the video. You can see him doing the classic turn it off and turn it on again method!

220mph, one handed looking at his dash trying to reset the settings on the steering wheel, that takes some balls and some skill.

Fixed that for you.Let's leave politics out of F1. Apart from F1 politics of course.

PS Schumi was to be hated unless you loved him, in which case Hill put his car in the way and he was defending against Villeneuve. Barrichello didn't have to go to the pit lane side, and he genuinely made a mistake in Monaco and couldn't recover (I can't remember Barrichello '02!). Me - I think he was a cheat, but his reputation will be saved by the terrible accident he had in Meribel, thus making it hard to remember his nasty side. And he was pretty successful overall. I wish I'd supported him!

I do find his outpourings of "I have to thank all of my fans..." claptrap somewhat contrived. In fact, most of his actions that aren't to do with driving seem to be calculated.
Possibly. PR. The way the world works. Ever been to a concert? Do they say "this place is the best" or "you are the best fans" etc? They do indeed.......... Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
