After seeing him come across as spoilt , pseudo American foot stamper, watching this has changed my opinion

Didn't realise Hamilton wore glasses.

They're literally glasses, not lenses. It's a fashion thing allegedly.

A credit to his family, the sport and Great Britain.

A very articulate interview. Lewis gave a much more in-depth view into his world than you get from him at the race track.

Enjoyable to watch.

I posted this to another thread, written in 2014 before the championship was sealed. https://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2014/11/19/t...

I think it's sad that people are willing to judge Hamilton based on the clothes he's wearing rather than what he does inside a car. I spoke to someone last week who openly hates hamilton and says he can't respect him because "he hangs out with rappers all the time" which effectively translates to "he doesn't do what I think he should in his private life therefore he's a bad person"

That article is amazing, and I'm going to have to take back some postings on here. I have always said he is supremely talented behind the wheel, but have been less enamored with his persona outside.

Looks like I'll have to eat my words.

I've read that article before a few years ago. Really good read. Think I'll be going through GP2 youtube videos later on.

Just confirmed what I already feel. Lewis Hamilton the brand is very different to Lewis Hamilton the man, or the racer.

I've always thought he was a despicable little tt, playing the race card in Monaco a few years back in a sport which really didn't need such things brought into it. Very hard to have respect for him when he thinks he can carry on like that, no matter how good a driver he is.

I must admit to liking him a bit more after Baku though, when in his frustration at not knowing what to do with his engine mode setting he told the radio man in the Merc garage that he was just going to start flipping all the switches until something changed.

It was a silly thing to say - the Spaniards brought the race card into it first though when they through bananas at his car and made monkey noises during testing (2008?)

It's interesting how one small comment in the heat of the moment can lead you to demonise him, and yet years of showing you his talent on track and working with kids, doing charity work, giving up his free time etc off track doesn't show people his real personality.

Here's another example....when do you see other f1 drivers doing this kind of stuff?

I haven't managed to find it but in Monaco 2014 there was a great interview with him and Will Buxton driving around town.

Edit: it's here http://motorsports.nbcsports.com/2014/05/30/the-su... but no longer available mad

This is a very telling comment for me. The Ali G reference Lewis made in Monaco was quite clearly intended as a joke, I watched it at the time and remember having a really good laugh over it. Yet, we get the kind or way over the top insult quoted above. I do wonder what Lewis does to provoke such vitriol.

In my mind's eye, those most threatened by Hamilton are probably the types who have one glove hanging out of the back pockets of those funny tartan golf trousers, and the sorts that probably have their initials on their parking space at work! I am not accusing the poster of this, just a general feeling I get.

Simply put, I feel that Lewis Hamilton is held to a different standard to the other drivers. If he said some of the things Kimi and Seb say, then the internet would melt down.

I'm definitely none of the above, I have no problem with him because he is black, or young, or a fantastically talented F1 driver, I just think it says a lot about someone when they play the race card. There's just no place for it in sport these days.

That is fair enough, and I did point out that was not aimed at you.

Lewis was plainly joking when he made the Ali G reference, he was laughing as he did it and quite clearly it was not supposed to be taken seriously or in any way 'playing the race card'.

I also agree with you that 'there is just no place for it in sports these days'. Sadly though, racism is alive and well, both in sport and in general life. In Spain in 2007 a section of the crowd at the F1 event dressed up in gorilla suits at Catalunya. Bananas continue to be thrown on the pitch at football games. It makes me sick inside, but this is still how it is. Whilst it is true that this says everything about the 'people' carrying out these disgusting acts and nothing whatsoever of their targets, it is still sobering to reflect that there are those walking amongst us still harboring these feelings.

Hamilton has said he doesn't need glasses. He jokes that his vision is 40:40.
