Have to say im a Hamilton fan..

But would like to hear other peoples opinions on top 5 fastest drivers in 2016. (imagine if you could have a race in identical cars) who would come out on top.. my personal opinion is:

1.Hamilton
2.Alonso
3.Ricciardo
4.Vestrappen
5.Vettel

What im getting to I would not have Rosberg or Raikkonen in my top 7 even.. Time for a change at Ferrari for sure!

If you mean in the fastest car then Hamilton. If you mean in a dog of a car then Alonso.

Impossible to know and not worth thinking about in my opinion. Look at the time difference between Hamilton and Rosberg in Canada Quali, absolutely nothing in it apart from a Rosberg lockup. Yet how many people would suggest Rosberg is in the top 2 or 3 drivers? Not that many, I'd guess.

Way, way too many variables. What defines fastest? Fastest single lap, race pace, progress due to race craft? Then factor in the different cars, strategy, whether their style fits the circuit etc etc. Even in 'identical' cars most of those variables would remain.

Unless that fantasy grid was ever arranged, nobody will ever know.

I think Rosberg is actually a really fast guy. Hamilton is famously fast in qualifying, yet Rosberg is capable of matching and beating him in the same machinery as he's proven over many years. Alonso has said in the past that he feels that he is on balance the most complete racing driver, but that others may be faster on an empty track, etc.

It's another of those things that we'll never be able to quantify in F1. It's like asking which boxer could hit the hardest or had the strongest legs, but even more difficult.

In the future the answer to this and every other 'who's best' question will be Vandoorne...

What exactly does that prove? Nothing. Ric is certainly not the fastest driver out there, yet again he got shown up by Max and it will not be the last time this season will it.? He was also getting stuffed by Kivyat more often than not and given the STR performance of Sainz vs Verstappen I would put money on Ric being beaten by Saniz over a season

Alonso, not beating Jenson too often is he? Without a supportive No2 and a team set up and revolving around him, he looks less and less. All the drivel about "dog of a car" is dog ****, he has a "dog of a car" now, where is he? Frequently behind Jenson

^^^ Where is Alonso you ask?

Four places higher in the 2016 points table. Wasn't that the way Button fans measured his performance against Lewis?

Currently, Alonso 18 points, Button 5. Stats frequently say nothing, but this clears things up a bit.

That is a pretty terrible post, to be fair.

Danny Ric has scored 50% more points than Max V, and Alonso has scored almost four times as many as Button. I'm not for a second saying that this is the only way to work out who is "faster", but it doesn't demonstrate much intelligence to base a strong opinion about something completely intangible on a series of random observations.

The OP asked for the fastest driver in identical cars, well the data supplied is the same car on the same track obviously not at the same time.

Posting a question like that on any forum will get a different opinion from everyone and no conclusion it is a bit like asking who is the best driver of all time.

Exactly. Unless driven at the same time one cannot say who is the fastest. Tyre age, tread depth, track temperature, engine temperature, moisture levels and a whole plethora of things will influence the time.

Over a lap and race I would say Hamilton is the fastest, followed by Ricciardo or Alonso. If the car works for him then Vettel would be up there too.

I would put Verstappen and Bottas above Vettel as well.

Seems like some of you guys are taking it a little too far, should have known really always the same on forums...

Was just looking to get a simple answer, I'm fully aware of tyre temp, depth, graining etc, but was just wondering if if you could use your imagination and if all was equal, who would come out on top.

What made me post this is, Hamilton is still proving he has soo much tallent behind the wheel, "has the party life" but shows he has the speed easy over Rosberg. verstrappen killing it, Alonso showing up Button in a sh*t Mclaren, and vettel taking over where Alonso left, (destroying Raikkonen)

Time for Raikkonen to leave, I was a fan, but he should have never come back after his move to rally. And Also dont think much of Rosberg, more suitable for Williams.

He pulled off some great results in the Lotus when he came back though... 2 wins, 9 2nds, 4 3rds over the two seasons with them. He finished every race of the season (if I recall correctly all on the lead lap bar Brazil as well) in 2012 and only failed to score points once. He came 3rd in the championship in 2012. Pretty good for 3 years out of the sport.

It's the Ferrari years that have been lacklustre (for Kimi's standards).

What doe it prove though.

It takes another skill level besides raw speed to focus the team on making your car the best over many different circuits and also to get the car home in the best points position despite what lady luck might throw at you in order to win a championship.

I rest my case biggrin
