Frank Dernie Podcast
Discussion
Another hour would have been great.
I loved the stories of his time with the wind tunnel and the development of active suspension. There's so much focus on drivers and all the soap opera that goes with them, it was so nice to hear some straight talking from Frank.
I was also suprised to hear hime say that Patrick Head was so dominant in Williams, I thought Frank has more influence.

I believe it was a heart problem - at least that's what I think I heard. Roebuck is the real deal - as they all are at MS . They are enthusiasts who write and not jobbing journalist who happen to be covering the sport. Simon Arron is similarly obsessive about the sport - and a very nice man too.His tongue in cheek F1 reports in Motorsport News were genuinely LOL material .
All the podcasts are great - even if the one with Mansell just confirms that he continues to take the lead role in his own soap opera. His degree of paranoia and sense of perpetual injustice is pitiful. Great driver on his day but you wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with him for too long ..

Roebuck is back in the mend now. Possibly the only man with a duller voice than Mansell's though
Good thing about MS is that they are not tied to a large publishing house and thus can be free of the politics around that when it comes to journalistic integrity.
Mansell is actually a lovely bloke when you spend time with him and he's not in the public eye. But he doesn't do himself any favours sometimes, that's for certain!

Was it Arron who used to write the F3000 race reports - some of the retirement descriptions were hilarious: Ran out of talent on lap 10, butter fingers didn't fasten the wheel up properly, etc.All the podcasts are great - even if the one with Mansell just confirms that he continues to take the lead role in his own soap opera. As for Roebuck being involved in a discussion belittling Mansell, well that's no surprise. Was Mansell really any worse than Alonso or Hamilton have been? I've never met him but he comes across as a sports enthusiast and he does seem to promote young talent so you can't knock him for that.
It certainly is not belittling but it is some gentle mockery.Few people in the racing business deny his talent but the public persona grates . He is -reportedly - a nice bloke to talk to in private but his endless self dramatisation, victimhood and paranoia(re Prost, Andretti, Piquet, Frank Williams ,Peter Warr et al ) in public are crass and unendearing. Listen to his own Motor Sport podcast - it is beyond parody.
But , as ever, we should mainly judge the art and not the artist; I saw him from trackside win his first GP and was in the Stowe grandstand when he mugged Piquet in '87 and it was bloody fantastic. I just have a problem with a driver who always wins despite the odds and the fact his car wasn't up to it and when he loses blames the car.

The MS podcasts are quality and a great way to while away an hour or so with the headphones on and a couple of beers.
The Frank Dernie and Alastair Cauldwell ones were both great but the one with Derek Warwick from a few years back probably tops the charts for me for being hilarious, serious and poignant in equal measure.
The double act of Wallace and Weaver was an excellent listen and i really enjoyed the one with Mike Earle.
The only frustration is that when the guest(s) are particularly entertaining that the podcasts are only an hour or so long!!

The Frank Dernie podcast was excellent, equally good the Ross Brawn & Nick Fry one and Dario Franchitti's.
Franchitti being put on the spot about The Laurel Hill Tunnel was a revelation - never knew about it until then!

Intriguing isn't it. If you Google it there is an interesting article by Race Car Engineering magazine (or something like that) which spills the beans (Dario mentions this article so don't know why he is so reluctant to talk). Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
