I am fully subscribed to the "we must keep the Classic venues" ( & a substantial part of the calendar in Europe as well thanks ) club, but, I am pretty impressed with the backdrop offered in the upcoming European ( rolleyes ) Grand Prix.

Hadn't seen this before, posted in case you hadn't either.

The reason I like the 'classic' venues is because the circuits aren't so wide and with so much run-off that you lose all sensation of speed. Any new circuit that's as narrow and as devoid of sensation sapping run-off as the old ones is equally welcome IMO.

I love the look of the circuit and there's definitely a few overtaking opportunities.

The cobbles can't be for real!

It looks nice until the whole thing is enclosed in fencing, the cobbles are paved over etc. Plus how often do we get a good street race? Most are processional at best.

We'll see.

At the end of the day we all know why the race is being held and it's not because it's a great circuit.

I see lots of boring ninety degree corners. I can't believe the cobbles will be left there for the F1 race, but that narrow section around the back of the old city walls could be interesting.

What we'll actually see of the circuit on tv is the usual concrete tunnel of temporary safety walls, fences and advertising banners, with the tv cameras mostly pointing down into it from above. They could put this circuit anywhere and it would still look the same on tv.

I think it will be like most street circuits-the attraction isn't for the televisual viewers it's for the actual attendees, which has to be a good thing right?

I looked into going as the prices are cheap, but the 10 hour plus air journey put me off. If there were a cheap direct flight from north of England/Scotland I think I'd be going.

They won't, but I wonder how well whatever's put over them will react to the vacuum created by the rear diffuser.

I presume the existing cobbles are being removed before the asphalt goes down. Then they can be replaced once the race is over.

Being a regular visitor to Baku, I can confirm that the way this is shot is pretty much exactly how they drive - traffic regulations are treated more like traffic suggestions.

I harbour the thought this will be rather good - certainly better than many anticipate.

For those thinking of going, don't forget that you'll need a visa. Direct flights from LHR on BA or Azerbaijani Airlines (which is a rather good carrier).

Glad to see the straights have been rebranded as "acceleration legs". Also, and I do mean this: brake fade at the end of the main acceleration leg will be serious. That is a very long acceleration leg.

If only there was another race on the same weekend. Somewhere close to home. France maybe. With better acceleration legs. A classic circuit, if you will

The other backdrop offered by the European Grand Prix is of a country ruled by a dictator with a less than stellar human rights record.
