Recently started a page on Facebook that may be interesting to Grand Prix fans and the younger generation.

E.R.A ( English Racing Automobiles )was formed in 1934 to compete in Inter-continental and British G.P races along with the many speed events and hill-climbs in the thirties and onwards - they have been competing ever since - driven by the worlds top drivers.

Hill-climbs and speed events attracted huge crowds that can exceed todays F1 events.

The E.R.A's are still invited to events worldwide today and are a joy to see and to hear.

Even today these beautiful cars rarely finish off the podium.

Enjoy and like the page if you do please.

John bolster used to race one, and he crashed in (I think) the British grand prix, with it landing on top of him. He survived, and when asked about it he said "The ERA is a very heavy motorcar..." biggrin

Didn't Prince Bira race them? I saw one of his ERAs at Brighton Speed Trials more than once I seem to recall. Don't know if he ever attended though.

ETA a quick Google suggests that he did but whether I was there on any occasion that he was there I don't know.

Wrote this recently. The car now belongs to Greg Whitten one of the Microsoft elite.

E.R.A chassis R2B was ordered by Prince Chula of Siam (Thailand), who eventually owned three E.R.A's for his cousin Prince B. Bira to drive. R2B, which was sold to the Princes' 'White Mouse' Racing team in 1935. and nicknamed "Romulus " When a second example was added to the stable in 1936, R2B the new car was named " Remus " With over a dozen victories in major and minor races, including one at Monaco, Romulus was one of the most successful of all privately campaigned ERAs.R2B was retained by the family and for many years remained in the ownership of Prince Chula's daughter. Arguably the most original of all ERAs, it was awarded 'Best in Class' at the 2008 Pebble Beach.

The wheels on that one seems unusually chunky. I think it was an ERA that I saw moving through the paddock at Brighton in the 1960s and it had narrower tyres and the driver was blipping the throttle as he went - deafening the bystanders! It took a while to realise that he was not dipping the clutch to rev the engine, but each time he did it, the rears wheels span briefly. Narrow tyres, Brighton's notoriously slippery tarmac, and a vast amount of instant torque. It might have been a Bugatti as it was a long time ago...

Not sure - Here is a photo taken 1934 of the first car R1A and the tyres don't seem much different.

Perhaps the tread pattern alters the perception of width...

The to Nick Masons book "into the red" has an ERA on it. Maybe see if you could add this as a youtube clip to the website?

I've always loved the ERA cars and the way they look. I remember one of the White Mouse Racing ones used to regularly turn up at Oulton Park until it was sold a few years back.
The engine noise, the supercharger whine, and the smell of running on Methanol biggrin
