McLaren lose Tag Heuer
Discussion
Reported on Autosport that Tag Heuer are leaving McLaren and going to sponsor Red Bull. More woes for McLaren then, lowest Constructor position since god knows and now another Blue Chip sponsor ups and leaves.
Also the added £5 million or so that JB gets this year. No Xmas party for McLaren staff this year...

Ron Dennis is probably still demanding a premium for coming last but one in the constructors. Still they have 2 world champions driving their bag of bolts. I can't see the logic in all honesty.
The premium brands in F1 are usually the ones close to the front, when you are scrapping for race completions - how can your marketing support designer brands paying big bucks. If RD had reduced his marketing model he may have still kept Tag & Boss due to brand longevity.
Makes little sense.

Must be bad when sponsors would rather back a team which doesn't have engines for next year and has been saying they're on the cusp of quitting the sport entirely rather than McLaren
Although it could also confirm that Red Bull are ready to go for next year, you have to imagine that TAG Heuer did their due diligence before committing to such a move, now what happens with Casio I wonder? As part of LVMH the TAG Heuer brand is moving from McLaren but another of their brands - Moet Hennessy - have recently joined them. So LVMH have not lost faith in McLaren.
What it has done for me though is make a TAG Heuer less desirable. For as long as I can remember I have wanted one and have recently been saving to get one (as something essentially frivolous I can't justify the spend any other way than a bit each month) but suddenly I'm not sure I want one any more. The fit of a luxury product with a fizzy drink just doesn't work for me, with the association being all wrong. With the smart watch TAG Heuer have announced I can see there being some merit to trying to appeal to a younger demographic which may be the case with Red Bull, and I'm not in that sector so maybe they don't care about me. In which case, I don't need to care about them.

Yeah, that would sway me not to buy a Tag as they are in partnership with a fizzy drink company. What it has done for me though is make a TAG Heuer less desirable. I got mine as I had always aspired to one from the days of Ayrton Senna and Mclaren. What it has done for me though is make a TAG Heuer less desirable. Interesting also that all the fuel advertising boards at a local Esso station mentioning the Mclaren-Honda partnership have been covered up too. Not replaced but hastily had plain white cardboard fixed over the front of it all where staff clearly don't have the tools to get into units to remove the content.
Not necessarily saying Esso will drop Mclaren too, but also clearly not a good sign for the team where their sponsors are embarrassed to be associated with them. I don't see now how anything other than a complete turnaround next year will save the situation. Or Eric. Or Ron either. He might be a majority shareholder but surely they are into the realms of a hostile board takeover if this carries on next year?

Moët Chandon are also a fizzy drink company, so irrespective of whether Tag are on the side of the Red Bull or the Mclaren, you'd have been in the same predicament.
I was wondering aloud in the other thread about Casio. They can't really be on the same car as Tag as they are in the same smart-watch market, so are they leaving F1 or migrating to a team with a more Japanese focus..? (OK, I was wondering if they might move to McLaren based on nothing but "they won't be on the RB, where makes sense next..").

Maybe RB are heading in a different direction and TAG like the way they are going.
