What's the lineage of existing teams?
Discussion
There's a lot of who bought whom, which changed to...
I was wondering what the lineage is.
So
Ferrari have always been Ferrari
McLaren I think have always been McLaren
Mercedes were Braun who were Honda...
Next year Renault will probably be there, having previously been Renault, who were Benneton...
Who's started a team from scratch, who bought in, and when did that happen?
I was wondering what the lineage is.

This will depend on how pedantic you want to get.I was wondering what the lineage is.

Mercedes were Brawn were Honda were BAR but the company was originally Tyrrell (the Mercedes F1 team of today is the same legal entity as the Tyrrell F1 team of the 1960s-90s).
Lotus were Renault were Benetton which acquired the Toleman team in 1985.
Today's McLaren team was the result of a merger of Ron Dennis's Project Four F2 team and the old McLaren racing team originally started by Bruce McLaren. The current racing team is a separate legal entity to the old racing team which is owned by McLaren Technology Group but is now the merchandising arm of McLaren. Ron Dennis recently incorporated a couple of new companies so maybe the McLaren F1 entry is going to change ownership again - who knows?

Farrari stopped being pure Ferrari when they were taken over by FIAT in the late 1960s.I was wondering what the lineage is.

Ferrari used to be Alfa Romeo. i.e. Scuderia Ferrari started life as the team that prepared and raced the works Grand Prix Alfa Romeos.
McLaren more or less went bust in 1980 but were taken over by a company run by Ron Denis called Project 4 racing. That is why since that time McLarens always carry an MP4/.. type designation.

Every time I hear/think of Toleman reminds me of the 1984 Monaco GP and the highly biased relationship between Prost and Balestrehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxYX2RZ4Ei8

Another bit of trivia. This years post 78 FIA Masters historic F1 champion was driving a Tyrrell 011, the 2nd driver in the championship was driving a Tyrrell 010. So if Nico pulls his finger out you could have a 1-2 in both the historic and modern F1 FIA championships for cars with Tyrrell lineage.

It makes you wonder why people run around like headless chickens that RB might pull out of F1.
Has it ever been so challenging to start an F1 team, though, even with an existing factory in place that you could potentially buy? Even purchasing a powertrain seems to be a major stumbling block at the moment.Without an off the shelf Cosworth or equivalent being available any potential team is at the mercy of one of the manufacturers and all the politics that entails.
