Shame but I can't say I blame him. This year has been dreadful and I can't see next year being a lot better

I don't think anyone would hire him.

Look at all the other teams, all the drives worth chasing are locked up. The ones with seat openings can't afford him.

Just listening to him talking you can tell he's off to do something else. Either another racing series or TV work, or both (see Ant D for details.)

Wouldn't surprise me. His attitude yesterday was pretty relaxed and one of a man who knows where his future lies. Some of his comments over the radio were priceless.

I saw it reported on the ever dubious F1Today.net page and was coming to post it when I saw this thread.

Cant say I blame him, but I think from what he's said previously it might be McLaren announcing he's not being renewed on his contract and then him announcing retirement

Yep, he's always had an approachable and honest way about him, however this weekend there was definitely something very positive and different about him, he knows exactly what was going on and he was in a very happy place, unlike last year where he was being strung along until the last possible moment; he's in charge this time.

It'll be a shame to see him go, I really like him but he McLaren are no longer for him and it isn't exactly a secret that Dennis isn't that keen on him; for some reason, wont be too long until the oldies are all gone, only Alonso and Kimi left really, time to make way for the new wave of stars that are coming through.

How long before Alonso retires?

perhaps wrongly, I have always looked at Jenson as an 'also ran' being in the right place at the right time for his championship win. But on reflection he has had served his time with lack lustre cars, so I wish him well where ever he ends up.
He has done a lot of good for F1 and whilst I can see the commercial logic in replacing him with a younger driver particularly if he is part of a sponsorship package his demeanour/personable attitude will be missed for sure.

As much as I would love to see him and the likes of Alonso, Kimi etc stay around for a bit longer, the talent of the new guys coming through is pretty immense so it feels like the right time for a clear out in the next season or two.

With the likes of Verstappen performing well beyond his years, and some impressive talent in GP2 (i.e. Vandoorne) looking for a seat, it's certainly time.

Having said that, it makes it all the more mystifying that Maldonado is coming back next year, money talks.

He's done his apprenticeship, time to move up to WEC with the big boys.

To be fair the run with lack-lustre cars was mostly his doing, especially the BAR/Williams thing. He was arguably at his very best from 2009-2011, it sounds stupid out loud but he needed that WDC to become a world class driver, if you get my drift.
Apart from in 2004 of course. Funny how Alonso never seems to get the same sort of comments.

He's in a great position either way, financially he is presumably very secure, I imagine a decent WEC seat (or whichever series he would like to pursue) wouldn't be hard to come by, and he certainly has the personality for TV work, whether that be working with Sky on the F1 or doing Top Gear.

WEC would do well to attract him as it could only do the series a lot of good in terms of marketability. Webber moving over seems to have generated a lot more mainstream press for the series (i.e. it's more than just Le Mans), Button would take that to another level as he seems to be globally popular.

He does from me! One of the key skills is not just great talent, but being able to use it in a team, and knowing where and when to jump. Both Seb and Lewis have shown that they're able to get into a team and make it work for them, and know when to exit a non-performing team.

Alonso just doesn't seem to have this skill; sure, he's a sublime driver, and if you put him, Seb and Lewis in exactly the same car with the same setup and asked them to race for 100 laps he might very well come out on top, but there's far more to it than that.

He's got an unerring talent for picking the wrong teams, or picking the right teams and destroying the relationship, and arguably his best years are behind him. I can't think of a top team that would want him, other than (maybe?) Renault, assuming that they actually get this deal together. Even then, they'll be three years before they deliver anything to challenge for a championship, and they'd be better to start with young talent and build around them (Verstappen, for example) than go with the very expensive and soon-to-retire option.

Amazon prime will need some sort of 'Stig' I presume, if he's not along side Evans that is.

If, as rumoured, Grosjean goes to Haas, i have a strange hankering to see him in a Lotus (or whatever they're going to be called next season). However, he may have burnt his bridges by calling the now-confirmed-for-2016 Maldonado "mental"...

Mix of WEC, TV work and setting up a triathlon pro-team would seem to suit JB well.

Re 2004- yes he was good, but he was great in 2009/2010/2011 imo.
Yes, he was at the top of his game then. A lovely bloke, very approachable. Exciting to think of him in a Porsche next year.
