Picking up the Baton for Ayrton Senna..
Discussion
I can largely ignore LH but I aren't sure how I feel about how he believes that he is picking up the baton for Aryton Senna;

Misguided or Misunderstood?

Why not.......he said in his interview that he doesn't believe he is better but for him Senna was his hero, so he is carrying on the work Senna didn't finish basically....
...like him or not, he's a soon to be triple world champion, the most successful British driver in history, and will most likely be the second most successful driver in f1 history sooner rather than later.....
...so yeh I don't see why he can't be classed as a pretty good driver....
...and before the hammy haters start coming out harping on about having the best car etc etc....I'm guessing Schumacher, button, Afonso, better, hill, mansell et all were driving dogs of a car when they dominated the sport

He seems to be hoping that if he plants this idea that he's the second coming into people's heads, the idea will catch on and no-one will say 'Lewis Hamilton' without tacking on 'the second coming of Senna'. It's a bit sad. He's really labouring it and it just isn't catching on. The only time I hear the two names mentionned in the same sentence the phrase 'inspired by' is in there somewhere.

So people aren't allowed a hero in their life, or allowed to follow in the footsteps of smoke that inspired and meant so much to them....?I don't think I've ever seen Hamilton say he is the second coming or reincarnation of Senna....it's the media that says all that crap....but he is inspired by Senna.....the rest of the crap either the haters, fan boys or media make up
Neither.
I think it's good for a young man to have a hero, somewhat even better when it's someone who they'll never know or meet as they can't ever be let down by them.
For most of my 20's I worshipped joe strummer and the clash even though I was barely born when they started. I suppose it's an adult form of the imaginary friend, someone who you can unequivocally look up to and simultaneously never be let done by.
Pick sonetine you aspire to be like and base your personal growing on that role model.
Hamilton seems to love the out and out racers, and love him or loath him Senna was certainly the racer's racer.

True although I hope he doesn't sink to those tactics.
hes so far ahead of the competition I don't think he needs to......but if he does, he will only be following in the footsteps of senna, prost, Schumacher and vettel....so hes got a lot of material he can watch if he needs some pointers on how to drive your competitors off the road
I think this needs to be taken in context with an answer he gave when question about how he felt to be closing on Senna's records. He said it was unfair to compare Senna to him as he is absolutely sure Senna would have gone on to a lot more success had he not died.
Which nobody would disagree with, but it is an interesting glimpse into how he rates himself against Senna.

Having the most dominant car in F1 history 2 years in a row obviously helps.
Lewis could start last and still finish on the podium. There is no competition. Rosberg has imploded and Ferrari et al are 1 second behind while the BEST driver in Alonso is worried if his Mclaren will finish without breaking down on him.

As you say, he gave a perfect answer, until it's quoted out of context Which nobody would disagree with, but it is an interesting glimpse into how he rates himself against Senna.
Surely his job in the car is exactly what Mercedes want, but is his ever more extreme image out of the car going to be a problem to them?
I guess Mercedes feel that the amount of publicity LH attracts outweighs the possibly negative aspect.
Or maybe Mercedes are looking to broaden their market place?
I hope I'm not coming across as a detractor, I find it interesting from a business and marketing point of view.
I think some of these people seem to have memories like a fish...
Probably think the greats of the past won their championships in car equivalent to this year's Manor f1 car.
And it does seem a lot on this forum that read the sport section of the daily mail see the journalist as their messiah, and take what's said as gospel
In fact, possibly only rosberg snr, perhaps button, surtees and hill didnt

Re Schumacher - 2000 he had equal best car; the 2001 car was dominant but was out muscled on power tracked by the Williams', 2002 was totally dominant, 2003 it was fighting the Mclaren and Williams all year long and 2004 was totally dominant also.
I know you are a Lewis fanboy but let's not beat about the bush, in recent memory no driver has had a car this dominant (1 second+ clear of the field) for two years in a ROW.
