We all know that to win the title you basically have to have the best car, but, are there any stats on most driver wins in non championship winning cars?

Do you mean the most wins in a season by a driver in a different team to the eventual champion, or the most wins in a season without winning the WDC that year, or more wins in a season than the eventual WDC, or most wins over a whole career without ever winning the WDC? I think these stats should cover most permutations:

Most wins in a season without winning WDC that year:

7 wins - 1984 (Prost), 2005 (Raikkonen), 2006 (Schumacher)

Drivers with more wins in a season than the WDC:

1958: Moss 4-1 wins versus Hawthorn. Hawthorn WDC
1964: Clark 3-2 wins versus Surtees. Surtees WDC
1967: Clark 4-2 wins versus Hulme. Hulme WDC
1977: Andretti 4-3 wins versus Lauda. Lauda WDC
1979: Jones 4-3 wins versus Scheckter. Scheckter WDC
1982: Pironi/Watson/Prost/Lauda/Arnouz each 2-1 wins versus Rosberg. Rosberg WDC
1983: Prost 4-3 wins versus Piquet. Piquet WDC
1984: Prost 7-5 wins versus Lauda. Lauda WDC
1986: Mansell 5-4 wins versus Prost. Prost WDC
1987: Mansell 6-3 wins versus Piquet. Piquet WDC
1989: Senna 6-4 wins versus Prost. Prost WDC
2008: Massa 6-5 wins versus Hamilton. Hamilton WDC
2010: Alonso 5-4 wins versus Vettel. Vettel WDC

Most career wins without winning WDC:

16 Stirling Moss
13 David Coulthard
12 Carlos Reutemann

The stats above make interesting reading. An alternative is number of wins in a career in cars that did not win the WDC (i.e. the WDC drove for another team.

I'm doing this the hard way, looking at a driver at a time.

First obvious contender is Senna who won 14 races in non championship winning Lotus and McLaren cars (the latter in 1992 and 1993 when the WDC drove a Williams).

Prost: 17 wins for Renault, McLaren (1987 - WDC in Williams), Ferrari.

What about all those winners before there was even a Championship? They deserve recognition too as some of them were arguably the best and bravest drivers there ever were.

I really find it strange and sad that Grand Prix racing before 1950 is almost totally ignored.

Clark: 11 wins in Lotus cars that did not win the driver's championship that season.

This is focussing on WDCs though. What about most wins in cars that failed to win the constructor's chanpionship? E.G. Piquet won the WDC in a Brabham that only came 3rd (I think) in the constructors championship in 1983

Schumacher: 25 wins in Bennetton (1992/3) and Ferrari (1996/7/8/9, 2006)

So now I'm looking only at drivers with more than 25 wins.

Hamilton has 17 wins in non championship winning cars, but also I notice he has won at least 1 race in every season he has competed in F1 so far.

kiseca has picked up on what I was trying to get to with my original question.

I was just interested in. Last career wins by drivers who were driving cars that weren't 'the best' that year.

A lot of people talk about what sets out the greats was how they got on driving 'a dog' of a car. So was just curious in who managed to win the most when not in the car that won the constructors title.

I know it's not perfect as there are years where there is more competition between cars than others but just thought it interesting.

Schumacher is the clear winner, there aren't many drivers with more than 25 wins in total, never mind more than 25 in non championship cars.

Mansell worked out at probably Hamilton level. He had 31 wins, 9 in his championship year leaving 22, and I stopped there but a few of those would have been alongside Piquet in his championship year in the Williams. So it would be 17 or 18 for Mansell I think.

Alonso worked out at 14 or 15 or something.

Slightly o/t but George O'Dell managed to win the 1977 sidecar world championship without winning a single race.

Keke Rosberg almost managed the same feat in the 1982 F1 season. He did manage to win one race in the end.

He has had the advantage of a good car from day one though, no other driver can claim that.

I've been thinking about buying a copy of this...

Has anyone on here read it?

That's the whole point. He's had 17 wins in cars that weren't good enough for either him or his team mate to win the championship in. But yeah, they weren't st cars, though why you'd single out Hamilton in this list is a mystery.
