I had the pleasure of taking my two lads to Silverstone last weekend for their 24th and 27th birthdays respectively. I had previously taken the youngest to the F1 weekend in 2007 (for his 16th) and the eldest to the same in 2004 (for HIS 16th)

I know, its a hard job being a dad, but I'm prepared to make the sacrifice....

Anyway, both lads and I were seriously underwhelmed by the sound of the current cars - they just sounded like they weren't trying very hard (which to be fair, in some races this year, they haven't, what with tyre management, fuel management, brakes management etc). We didn't even bother with earplugs.

Having said that, they sound better live than they do on the TV....

After Quali on Saturday, we were wandering back towards the exit when we heard some proper engines - we legged it up into the grandstand opposite the new pits in time to see the start of the GP2 race - what an epic wall of sound!

Because they SOUNDED faster, it looked like they were actually going faster.

After getting home, I watched a couple of videos I took from the start of the 2007 race - the noise was absolutely incredible and its clear to me that a large part of the F1 spectacle has been lost

Oh - and out of the all of quiet F1 engines, the Honda sounded truly awful - a bit like they had a V8 in the back with a couple of spark plugs removed to make it fit the rules - it constantly sounded like it was about to expire (which it usually is...)

I know things have to progress, but PLEASE bring back howling V10s and V12s

I was thinking the same thing about the engines. I only went on Sunday but as I was walking around too Stowe, I could hear the GP2 cars racing and the sound was that load I couldnt hear my other half talking lol. I would even go as far as saying the Porsche racing was louder then the F1 cars. The Mclaren, Alonso was driving did sound awful thou, I was surprised every time he completed another lap.

I must be the only one who prefers the new deeper sounding V6 turbos to the whining and squealing V8s. I miss the V10s but I'll never miss the V8s.

Not to mention you can hear other aspects of the car now instead of just weeewweeeeweeeeeweeeeweeee

I don't know if it is just the sound but for me something is definitely lacking in F1 at the moment. I'm also getting a bit irritated with the media talking up the chances of Ferrari/Williams (some even claiming Williams could have won by giving Bottas the nod) when clearly Mercedes still have a massive advantage - far more than anything else seen in the last 10 - 15 years.

The race was spiced up by the rain but that does not signify the rebirth of F1 as some commentators (i.e Martin Brundle in his sky article) seem to be claiming.

Anyway, yes the sound is underwhelming but it is just symbol? for a larger problem, if that makes sense.

I thought exactly the same last Sunday at the GP.

The GP2 cars did sound epic : but from where I was standing Sunday which was on the curve at Farm / Village, you could see that the F1 were going much faster. The downshift noises the F1 made were incredible with the energy capture and turbo whistle which was an experience in itself.

A V12, with turbo and ERS would be amazing!

The Honda did sound crap - but not as bad as the Maurissa.

I agree that the V8s were just noise, and lots of it. The V10s were much more musical and the V12s were as good as a symphony orchestra... angel

Had a quick browse of "F1 sound" videos on Youtube last night and found that the old turbo era was definitely louder, possibly because they were making almost double the horsepower of todays cars (in quali trim, at least) - 5+ bar boost anyone?....

Don't believe all you hear on youtube . The 80s turbo era cars were not all noisy by any means . The much vaunted and mega powerful BMW 4 cylinder in the Brabham sounded like industrial machinery, the Hart and Zakspeed 4s sounded unremarkable apart from sundry farts and parps on the overrun, the Ferrari and Ford V6s were a little noisier but not loud . Unlike the Renault V6 , for some reason especially in the Ligier which was bone shakingly deep and very loud indeed and the Hondas were extremely sonorous too. But none sounded a patch on the 10s and 12s which superseded them - Lamborghini V12 in the Larousse and the Toyota V10 were two of the best engine notes I have ever heard, along with BRM P160 and Matra MS120 V12s from early 70s.

The old turbos made more noise because they used wastegates to control the turbos, these new ones use the mgu-h to control the turbo.

I don't really have much of a problem with it any more to be honest. Been to 4 V8 races and 2 V6 races and the only trouble I have is that not being able to hear them coming at times makes it hard to video them. They still look properly fast; I was impressed especially when I watched the TV highlights later with how fast they looked through Maggots/Becketts/Chapel, and I've been watching for a few years now.

I'd rather have proper cutting edge tyres back than loud engines, no doubt about it.

Can you not post this st on the multitude of previous threads? All you need to search for are any of the following:

"F1 noise"
"Not how it used to be"
"Rose tinted spectacles"
"Why is there a black guy here"
"Where's James Hunt"

That'll get you there. These threads are boring now, you're not going to change the sport by repeating the same thread on a bi-weekly basis. Good job I'm not moderating, I'd be issuing time off for people posting this st time and time again.

What a deeply troubled man you sound. If it doesn't interest you why read it ? Rhetorical question by the way - don't bother to reply thanks.

And if I was moderating I'd be issuing time off for people shouting and swearing at one another like you've just done. Couple the rant straight out the gate to the additional content (no matter how you intended it to come across), it is low brow and doing nobody any favours. Yourself especially.

You do come across as the sort of person that'd like to moderate on various forums hehe
