Bernie wants simpler cheaper engines to get more manufactures in. Fair enough. However he doesn't rate the knowledge of the people who actually pony up to go to his races...:

The Mercedes power unit has dominated F1 this season as it did in 2014. But Ecclestone has misgivings. “Mercedes have got a super team, a super engine which is an incredible piece of engineering. But if you and I and go the grandstand and ask a spectator ‘How many cylinders has that engine got?’ one or two might get it right. And then you ask them what capacity it is. They don’t know, and they don’t care. They couldn’t care less.

“They want to see Williams winning, Ferrari winning, Red Bull winning – they want everybody to have a chance of winning. At the moment people like Vijay [Mallya] at Force India spend an awful lot of money and have got zero chance of winning. And it’s not on. Let’s tear the bloody rule book up and start again.”
Perhaps you could make the teams use only primary colours so we can all shout "come on blue!!!!" and give everyone massive foam pointy hands to wave ...rolleyes

Apart from being a massive patronising , question is: why don't you just get CVC to sell it and GTF Bernie ?

When it comes to the majority of F1 fans, he's probably not far wrong.

I'm not so sure. EVERY F1 fan I've ever spoken to EVER knew what the basic technical rules in any given season were.

To be fair to Bernie, and I don't really like to, he didn't say F1 fans he said spectators in the grandstands and he may well be right.

So do people think the fans in the stands are less knowledgeable than the viewers of this forum for example ?

The question is are they fans or spectators? A fan is fanatical about the subject and would be far more knowledgeable than most who attend GPs. I know lots of people who go to GPs without an in depth knowledge, indeed without much knowledge at all of the technicalities. They go for the celebrity of the event, to cheer on a team or driver, all sorts of reasons, which don't need that much knowledge.

They go because they're invited, have some connection to a supplier or sponsor, all sorts of reasons.

When I've been to events, I've seen people get up from their seats and wander off for a drink or something in the middle of the race. I doubt these people have much technical knowledge of an F1 car at all.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bernie is probably right this time, but then I'm not sure that it matters.

I watch f1 occasionally, and I would go and watch it. But being honest no, I don't know how every mechanical part of the f1 car works,

And would it bother me if they changed the engines to allow to the other teams to have a chance of winning? Of course it would not.

Ild love to see the lower teams have more of a chance.

And I think that's the point he's getting at.

A fair point! But then again, it's probably the real fans who have been turned off attending in recent years, not the general spectator.

I'm sure that most of those at Club last weekend would know more about F1 cars that Ecclestone.

I used to think I was an F1 nerd until I stood at Club.

I wonder if Bernie has ever actually spoken to a real F1 fan to know what they think or want from the sport? Anyway, I'm sure the aim of what he said was purely to reinforce his own negative views about the current engines, not to demean the paying punters.

The lower teams would have a chance if Bernie didn't buy off the top teams with the commercial rights money. How, for example, can Ferarri revive more money from the commercial rights than the teams that beat them in the WCC?

All this talk of the cost of engines is smoke and mirrors diverting the masses from the single biggest issue in F1, which Bernie is responsible for.

Depends on where you are, If you are talking about British/European fans then I think Eric is right they all know the basics and most are fairly knowledgeable, But that is not where the numbers are, there are 1 billion people in China and a huge number are F 1 'fans". they neither know are care about the details and Bernie is right.
Living in Asia I am amazed that people count them selves as fans but have no interest in the 'sport'.

Football is worse, I read that 90& of the people who consider themselves MU fans can't find Manchester on a map, they have no interest other than the image tHey are sold on the TV, and 99& have no hope of ever being able to afford a ticket.

So most fans are like Ecclestone then? No real interest in the sport.

That would be a fking difficult ask! The number of ppl on this forum who appear to have more than a handful of braincells can be counted on one hand!

Every single thread around here descends into arguing about some minute itty bitty point of almost irrelevant bks in some weird attempt to appear to out geek someone else and thereby appear the most knowledgeable. The end result doesn't produce a forum of deep knowledgeable fans but a forum of anal retentive fkwits who should never be allowed out into society.

You do like it here - don't you.

What is worse than an anally retentive geek?

Someone who thinks they are superior to an anally retentive geek and whinges about them on the forum where they hang out.

Depends on how into the sport you are. I was brought up by my father who is a loyal F1 fan and every race weekend we would watch it on the TV. I am now 23 and actually research what the manufacturers are doing in pre-season testing, improving the engines and cars, putting new tech into them, watching how the systems work etc.

I bet they can count without using their fingers though.
