Red Bull Aston Martin
Discussion
Basically i am guessing in the F1 strategy group, if Red Bull were running Aston/Merc engines, this would form a formidable block on regs changes Merc don't like the look of.
As those are being mainly driven by Red Bull it would also in one swoop take out the enemy. Merc would then be banking that red Bull without Newey daily design input, plus as a customer team of theirs won't be a match for them over a season

They're also talking to Williams, Force India and possibly Lotus:

Will this really help 'turn the Aston Martin brand around' - can't see it's done a lot for Infiniti?

Dear Gaydon Kamaraden,
We can't help noticing Herr Aston that there are rumours of you having friendly talks with Herr Horner and his Rot Bulls. As your new power train technology partner and supplier we would like for these conversations to take up Herr Horner's time but ultimately go nowhere.
Danke, tchuss!

ifiniti are owned by renualt, wheras the aston-merc relationship is a little more arms length (road car engine supply and small stake?)http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/119869

Like you say I can't see the value for aston in paying for red bulls pretendy aston mercs unless merc are willing to foot much of the bill, and I can't see why they'd do that.
A merc powered "aston" chassis on the other hand would tie in beautifully with the road cars.
Or combine the two, RB take a back seat and are title sponsers/49% co owners to the team thats now aston-merc, with potential for partnership/sponsorship in other series? GT, endurance? aren't they already balls deep in bed with VAG of all people?

If that happens I can't see Mercedes wanting Horner in charge still, not after the way he's ripped into RenaultLike you say I can't see the value for aston in paying for red bulls pretendy aston mercs unless merc are willing to foot much of the bill, and I can't see why they'd do that.

I would have thought Aston couldn't even slightly afford an F1 program (if we are talking doing a chassis with a merc engine) - are major motorsport series really just the preserve of mainstream manufacturers these days?
Aston couldn't afford to develop new road car engines, let alone an F1. It would pure marketing, and the upside from Aston's side is it would be very cheap.Say the Merc engine costs £18m, they say to Red bull, let us pop a sticker on the side of your car, and we will pay that £18m. Red Bull get free engines, merc get another customer, and more importantly another powerful ally on the Strategy group for f1. On paper it works for most parties involved.

When you refer to "they" I guess you mean Mercedes? Aston, as you say, don't have the reserves to pay for anything.Say the Merc engine costs £18m, they say to Red bull, let us pop a sticker on the side of your car, and we will pay that £18m. If this is true, it's certainly a bizarre marriage of brands...
Aston Martin who is associated with style and elegance; I'm sure many think of James Bond when they think of Aston.
Red Bull, who is associated with being 'Rad' and 'Gnarly'. A brand strongly associated with youth, usually doing some sort of extreme sport.
Why they'd think this would be considered a good marketing link-up, who knows? I doubt anyone rich enough to buy an Aston Martin would drink Red Bull (or, at least, view it as 'fashionable premium brand') and I'm sure a Red Bull-addict would view Aston Martin as being rather staid.
Thinking of such an alliance - imagine the next Bond film, if Bond pulled up to some casino in a V12 Vanquish; you see him exit the Vanquish, wearing a Tom Ford suit but wearing DC Skate Shoes and an over-sized baseball-cap, worn at a jaunty angle. He proceeds to skateboard into the bar and orders a Jägerbomb for himself and a Skittle Bomb for an attractive lady; he then proceeds to tell her how he did some sick drifting in the Aston, earlier-on that day...
Still, if it meant Red Bull (and/or Toro Rosso) were able to give Mercedes a serious headache next year, then so be it. I'm fearful that, even next year, no-one will be able to seriously compete with Mercedes. Ferrari's progress has seemingly stalled at the moment. Williams don't have the resources and - I suspect - the killer instinct to close the gap to Mercedes. At this rate (considering today's news) it will be lucky if Lotus survive and if they ended up as Renault, I'd suspect that would write them off for a year or two, at least. [Even if Lotus kept Merc power, I'd hardly imagine they'd emerge next year as a major force]. And at this rate, McLaren-Honda may be able to compete with Mercedes in 2030.
It would have also have the benefit of seeing/estimating how badly RBR were hamstrung by Renault and how much is down to a pseudo-post-Newey slump.
I also hope there are more bizarre partnerships announced in due course. Lidl sponsor Ferrari, Pukka Pies sponsors Merc and Imodium becomes McLaren-Honda's title sponsor

Mercedes are not going to allow Horner or Dieter or anybody associated with Red Bull to get their hands on their engines in any way shape or form. How do some people not get this? They certainly are not going to allow Aston to give their bloody engines to Red Bull as some kind of fking proxy, esp when Mercedes own Astons balls!
Get a grip ppl.
Get a grip ppl.
But merc own Aston martin albeit a tiny 5%, not the other way around so how do Aston martin think they can offer out merc f1 engines without mercs blessing
Unless the whole idea is for AM to buy red bull albeit with merc money and they have got it let's be fair thus eliminating the enemy for merc as Toto put last weekend and then badge the merc engines as AM's
