After being tempted by £120 GA tickets, man-maths took over and I was about to book three grandstand tickets at Stowe for my two lads and myself - got through the booking system only to be told that parking is an ADDITIONAL £65 eekmadfurious

WTF - as well as taking over £750 off me, they want on of my passenger's arm and leg to park my car

By the time I've got to Silverstone and back, and paid for the inevitable £6 bacon butty, I'm looking at the wrong end of a grand to take my two kids to watch an F1 race

Is there any wonder people are staying away?

FFS - they even want a £7 "handling fee" - what a rip-off....

I'd sooner spend a bit extra and take the lads to Spa

I'm out... frown

£14 - £40 used the 20 odd quid option before - very well organised and a short walk to the track.

I accept that the GP tickets are a small fortune but the race is normally oversubscribed and, don't forget, they lost money on last year's GP.

What are the options? Get more advertising? Can't do that, Ecclestone has that wrapped up.

Don't forget, Silverstone will be concerned that with viewing figures dropping, the races over the next few years might not be sell-outs.

I reckon that's a concern already, hence the discounted weekend GA tickets today - £120 instead of £175, but I really don't fancy having to fight for a decent spot and then not being able to move all day

Looks like I'm going to have to take it on the chin or watch the Beeb

As I've said many times before, it has got to the stage when 5 days camping at the Le Mans 24h is cheaper than going to the BGP at Silverstone for one day, even if you live a short drive from the track.

Not worth the money in my view, I'd rather watch the F1 on TV.

Ah, yes, well, erm - I appear to be going to LM as well this year, hence the fact that the F1 was a bit of a tough call

LeMans - £900 for 2 people glamping at Porsche Curves, plus 5 days subsistence (is £250 enough?), plus £300 fuel = £1450-ish
Silverstone F1 - £837 for 3 people, plus half a tank of diesel @£40, plus two days subsistence (£100?) - about £950

Ah well - its only money, and I haven't been to the F1 since 2007 and I've never done LM before

F1 now booked - two excited sons (aged 23 and 26, but still V excited) and one poorer dad....

If they need £x for ticket option y they should charge £x for ticket option y and I'll decide, not 80% to make it seem less then load up something largely unavoidable like parking as it's just taking us all for fools and puts your back up, and will allways been seen as gouging.

I've bought premium grandstand tickets for the F1 in the past and completely sympathise with the difficulties of the economics they have to make work, but this isn't the way to do it.

I've done Spa and Monza for the F1 and I was amazed at how cheap Le Mans is, think between 4 of us camping+general admission was £79 each.

It's always worked out cheaper for us to go abroad for a top tier race than go Silverstone. Its absolutely bonkers how ferry/fuel/accomodation&general admission at a foreign race can cost less split between 4 or 5 people than just going to Silverstone general admission.

Don't believe it.

Last year I was told it was £40 for parking in the circuit in advance. Later it became apparent that it was only £40 if you we were "found" to be parking in any of the main carparks. The reality was we turned up on race day, not early, at about 8am, parked right outside the pits-straight car park (half empty btw and a 5 min walk to our grandstand), only to find that after deliberately and honestly seeking an official about how we pay, the system was that we get charged £40 for parking "if" we were found to be parking. This meant you parked and waited until the end of the day to find if an official had wandered round the carparks, notes REG's, so that you were to be charged for it and charged you. We parked, watched the race and got home without paying a thing.

In summary, I'd say paying for parking in advance is for the people who have more money than sense.

Hats off to Silverstone's fairness basically. And a set of fingers to BE's rule-by-fear tactics.

Ah, but that's doing posh camping so not 'proper' Le Mans...

Camping is £75, entrance is another £100 for two, £75 for the crossing £200 fuel & tolls if you're in something reasonably normal and a couple of hundred for charcoal, meat and beer from Carrefour. Net cost is a bit over £300 a head for LM, and once you've paid for overpriced food at Silverstone as well as the obligatory rip-off parking it ends up costing more to see a lot less action. Of course with LM you also get the drivers parade in the town, the pit walk and a lot more access to the interesting bits than in the F1.
