I've decided to go to Silverstone on F1 raceday - a group of six of us driving up from London.

Glad of any advice on travel and best viewing:

Driving route - staying in Amersham Saturday night, we're planning to leave early and take A roads. Where's the best place to park that gives a chance to get away reasonably quickly post race, or am I just dreaming?

Viewing - we have general admission tickets, where's the best place to set up to watch the race? Assuming somewhere near Beckets/Maggots complex or the end of Wellington?

Many thanks

Sean

Best spots for GA viewing fill up very quickly, so best plan to arrive as early as you can and set up some chairs.

I quite like Luffield, as you can see quite a lot of track, the cars are running slower and there's usually a fair amount of overtaking attempts and other drama in to the breaking zone at the end of wellington. There's also a big TV screen so you can keep track of what's going on.

There's normally plenty of action at Stowe, especially on the first lap. I wouldn't recommend Copse as you can't see much of the track, but you do get a good sense of the speed and there is a TV screen there (can't recall if it's viewable at GA spots tho).

I quite liked Magotts/Becketts - close to the cars so you get a real sense of speed.

As mentioned you need to be nice and early, I think we got into the circuit about 7am and managed a good spot, the next year we were only about half an hour later and were much further back (around Luffield I think, which wasn't great).

Unless you have prepaid parking at the track you won't be getting into any of the official car parks but that shouldn't be a big problem. Its been a couple of years since I've been on race day but the best way in and out is from the south via the Dadford Road.
M40 to Bicester then A41, A4421 through Bicester and on to Tinglewick. Then its Tinglewick to Water Stratford to Stowe and then onto the Dadford Road. As you approach the circuit on the Dadford Road you should find a friendly farmers field to park in (for a appropriately sized F1 fee I'm afraid), or you can usually park at the Golf Club.
On the way out you will have to retrace your steps south down the Dadford Road because of the one way system emptying all of the official car parks northwards onto the A43. When you get to the cross roads with the A422 there will likely be a sign telling you to turn right. Don't, as this will take you to Brackley and into all the other race traffic. Keep going straight on and retrace your route all the way back to Bicester and the M40. Its usually a steady run out without too much hassle.
