Lewis Hamilton's new contract.
Discussion
Been hearing a lot about Lewis's new contract, and the fact he has yet to sign it.
Presumably he WILL sign, and he is just haggling over terms?
Or is he thinking about moving on?
Just got to thinking, McLaren sold Alonso on whole McLaren Honda "resurgence" presumably.
Bearing in mind that Senna was Lewis's idol, could McLaren be perhaps trying to woo him back under the same premise?

Race winning car.....now
Significant advantage over the rest of the field
Provider of last year's championship
Secured investment for next (x) years
Pretty confidently have the measure of your team-mate
McLaren
Potential rival to Mercedes.......at some point.....maybe
Team-mate (Assuming Alonso) considered best of the rest of the drivers. Past history with him not exactly sunbeams and roses.
Senna used to drive a Honda
Haven't won a race in two years
Likely year or even two before returning to competitiveness
Where would you sign?
Sentiment (the Senna thing) does not win races and championships. Racing drivers want to win races and championships, especially Lewis.
He and Mercedes are ironing out details, which takes time. That is all.
Any other team/driver would only be used as a bargaining tool and they've both come out openly and stated that they're not doing that.
He will sign.

How long for? The Rosberg/Hamilton rivalry will come to a head again.LaurasOtherHalf said:

Would MB really give a non German number 1 status over a German driver?
Yes.One of them brings a LOT of money into the team and the publicity etc. The other not so much.
Frankly, look at Nico's behaviour in the race - he just let Vettel through and pretty much asked (on around what lap 22 or so?) if Vettel could past did that mean he would win?!? I mean, try that new radical idea, race!! Overtake...
But all that said, I am not sure Lewis would want a passive number 2 driver. More fun to be had fighting (cleanly and fairly on track).

Lewis has categorically stated on many occasions he doesn't want number 1 status just equal tools to do the job.
He would be mad to go to
1) Mclaren as for most of the time when he was there they either fked up strategy, or produced a st car the last good car was 08 what's suddenly going to change that they haven't managed in the last 7 years.
2) Ferrari as Vettel is the golden boy there now even after only two races the way the team gush about him I doubt Hamilton would go in as an equal.

I dunno, i always thought he was happiest in his work with HK as his whipping boy, im not sure that any other driver wouldnt want the same
I thought the opposite to be honest. He made a lot more driving errors in 2008 compared to 2007 and i felt it was partly because HK didn't keep him honest enoughIn the middle of last year both Hamilton and Mercedes agreed that neither party would talk to anyone else,to focus on the two championships and they would sort it out after the season.
Both are in a very strong negotiating position as Hamilton is probably the best driver and Mercedes have the best car but as the car is the most important aspect in F1 at the moment i would say that Merc have the upper hand.
As Hamilton is a two times world champion I would guess he has had about a 25% increase in salary,Merc have plenty of money and he probably is going to sign for two years with an option on both sides for the third year.
The delay is probably Hamilton doing much of the negotiations himself and now the lawyers finalising and drawing up the contract along with Mercedes.
