I went to a forum organised by James Alan. It was superb and Whitmarsh was there. He really made the day. He was straightforward and self deprecating, this last without being OTT. I got the impression that he tried to answer each question honestly, although when something was secret/embarrassing he didn't so much lie and admit he could not answer.
After the forum he stayed behind for a chat with the fans.
As you say, a decent bloke. I was sorry to see him leave the sport.
McL's 'my' team and some of the shine went for me.
Sadly at McLaren he wasn't the star many thought. Intellectual yes, but a manager of people not so much and dabbled in areas that were not his expertise. Butted heads with some very strong professionals and sadly lost out. His wallet is full and I am sure he enjoyed his time in F1 but won't be going back.
He seamed a decent bloke and I wish him well in his new position and the team qualify for the chance to challenge Oracle Team USA at the 35th America's Cup in 2017.The aerodynamics will be good with Adrien Neweys input and sure they will have some of the best in the business in the team.
If they won great publicity for all the team and the UK.Also to kick the Americans ass.

I think he'll do well there, his exit from McLaren was all about Ron seizing control again.
How does one sieze control of what is already yours? Ron's step aside was just a smokescreen deal to get the increasingly deranged Max Max off their backs. Max is now history, off playing concentration camp, but definitely not Nazi themed, games with his "friends"... so Ron was able to pop back into play, quietly.
Nobody ever did get fingered for that elaborate set up, but I think it was someone whose name begins with a B, not an R.
Good interview with Whitmarsh by Nigel Roebuck -

funnily enough I bumped into him at the Shell garage in Ottershaw, Surrey just as an orange macca 650 came in for fuel. He was driving a 911. We chatted for a minute and when asked if he was watching McLaren with interest he graciously said they will sort themselves out sooner than people think. . .so upholding his nice guy of the sport in my eyes.

Ron was a 25% shareholder when he stepped down. Mercedes were 50% and the other 25% Mansour Ojjeh
I think the problems really started when Merc quit and Ron fell out with Ojjeh. Martin then became a threat.
By the time Whitmarsh was on the line. The Bahrainis had bought the Mercedes stake. I think though that RD saw that as the opportunity to take back control of the group. Whitmarsh always struck me as a good guy. I think he'd be an interesting guy to listen to.I think the problems really started when Merc quit and Ron fell out with Ojjeh. Martin then became a threat.
Well its good to see him booted out, McLaren are in a much better place since he left.
Two long term drivers, who don't upset the apple cart, and car that has consistently challenged the front of the grid. Also, we now have a team that doesn't BS all team statements - we know why cars crash, we know the new engine deal is coming out with a bang, and the team is fully sponsored due to good negotiation skills.
Any need for the ?
