Its probably me doing the whole 2+2 = 5 but is F1 in trouble
a couple of the cars this year are lacking in overall sponsorships McLaren like last year Williams other than Martini, Sauber again Force India (rumoured) even the Mercedes looks plain

Are sponsors turning away from the F1 Moneypit?

I wonder if viewing is down since half the races went to Sky?

I expect they have the odd viewer outside the UK.

I'm sure they do, but we must be one of the bigger markets?

Without a doubt the sport is in trouble when a team like McLaren cant even get a title sponsor, the small teams cant even get any notable sponsors on board, also worth noting the audience figures quoted by F1 are massively over inflated and the big advertisers will see through those false claims.

I presume that's just a hunch unless you have any figures. I'd be surprised if we were in the top 5, TBH.

As a percentage of the population the UK must be pretty big still. I'm sure countries like Brazil probably have some pretty impressive TV numbers though and, probably, Japan.

But it's interesting when you think of the crowd sizes at the races and how that might reflect the general population's interest levels - and if that is an accurate representation then the UK is still one of the biggest markets. We don't see Friday or Saturday crowds anywhere near as big as Silverstone's anywhere else in the world. Aside from the aforementioned Brazil and Japan only Spa comes close, because so many camp and make a weekend of it and it is so easily accessible from the UK and Germany. Hungary is also always quite busy, as was Austin in the first year, but that has faded over the last two years.

Russia, hosting its first race last year, was pretty empty on Friday.

According to this article (whether you take it with one or two pinches of salt) the overall audience dropped by 5.6% to 425 million with Germany losing 22.4 million (12.4 %) viewers.

I can believe the viewing figures are massively flowered up.

I always find the relatively low numbers of twitter followers for the F1 drivers very interesting. Irrelevant that Bernies lot are only just now adopting 'social media' there are lots of people in F1 very active on there, yet the numbers are just a fraction of their counterparts in other sport.

Hamilton 2.6 million followers
Alonso 2.2
Mayweather 5.5
Djokovic 3.8
Ronaldo 33.3

Indeed, just a hunch. F1 always seemed quite UK focussed to me.

Indeed. I've been wondering recently why Bernie/F1 doesn't just do a proper F1 app to watch the races on. I'd be more inclined to pay to watch on there than for Sky Sports. Plus, how much more profitable would it be for them if they cut out the middle man?

The Rights holders in the various countries would have something to say about it I expect.

That's becasue Ron is trying to charge sponsors World title money when they are not even in the top 3.

In terms of absolute number perhaps but in terms of viewers who can afford to buy the stuff the sponsors are selling probably a lot closer to the top

F1 could be in for tricky times but on this one, it's not it's fault - or not all its own fault.

It remains a highly cost effective means to build global recognition but today, there's even cheaper and more effective means to the same end. Look at Go-Pro; a company that has achieved global dominance in its sector through nothing other than social media.

Because these days, everyone wants a deal, margins on the sort of goods normally associated with F1 are far more marginal than they were previously so companies are having to look a bit smarter at how they market.

Aren't viewing figures down partly because some countries have moved completely from free to air TV coverage, France included?

There are some figures here https://f1broadcasting.wordpress.com/category/fore...

UK second highest viewing figures in Europe for that race. More figures elsewhere on the blog.
