Mike Thackwell

See link below... the full article is excellent. I still remember a very cool Sauber from Silverstone in '87, so glad he's part of my motorsport history..

Good enough to have been one of the very best. Quickly became disillusioned with the bullst surrounding F1. Had a huge accident and suffered injuries not dissimilar to Massa. Found that he had to try to drive fast, rather than just doing it (similar to Moss post accident). Went away from motorsport and enjoyed his life.
Work noting that Jonathan Palmer only really won the 1983 F2 title after Thackwell came back from injury and acted as a rear gunner.

In a different league to Palmer! Work noting that Jonathan Palmer only really won the 1983 F2 title after Thackwell came back from injury and acted as a rear gunner.
Silverstone, early 80s, spring, pissing it down = Thackwell driving away from everybody else. Those piss wet through early season visits to Silverstone gave me a life long aversion to the place! Thackwell was the quickest bloke I ever saw in an F2 car though - outstanding driver, but very much an "on my own terms" guy.
Anyone remember this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3wUlNhapmo
Might be worth watching from about 14 mins.

It was my post you just commented on and I must admit to being confused by your reply. Would you care to expand on your rather limited thought?
