F1 extra points

Why not do anything more sensible than awarding double points for the last race?
The point of this is to prevent the season from being "decided" too long before the last race. I.e. for it to become mathematically impossible for a number of things to happen, including for the current champ leader to be overtaken. All the extra points of the last race means that fewer things become mathematically impossible. It's possible that we could be in a situation where a guy wins 3 times as many races as his nearest rival (and nearly 2/3rds of all races) but loses the championship because his car lets him down at a race deemed twice as important as any other.
The possibilities of it being a farce far outweigh any benefit in my opinion, particuarly as the knock on effect will be greater still at the U.S. and Brazil GPs where teams are far more likely to take an engine penalty to ensure they don't need a new one at Abu Dhabi.

Agree with the 50 point crap this year, but that is only this year, one point for fastest lap will not be an issue ?The possibilities of it being a farce far outweigh any benefit in my opinion, particuarly as the knock on effect will be greater still at the U.S. and Brazil GPs where teams are far more likely to take an engine penalty to ensure they don't need a new one at Abu Dhabi.

Looking forward now, Lewis could take his win streak to 6 (and 11 overall) and still lose the championship by 19 points if his car fails him at Abu Dhabi, amazing when you think his nearest rival has only won 4 races so far.
Has a driver ever won so many races (as a percentage of the season total, and/or more than his nearest rival) and not won the championship?
This is my fear , and would make a joke of the WDC if it happened Has a driver ever won so many races (as a percentage of the season total, and/or more than his nearest rival) and not won the championship?
