Youngest ever F1 driver.
Discussion
I know they all have to start somewhere, but he was karting just over a year ago (according to the report on the radio this morning).
Moving to F1 so quickly and having to adjust to the way the F1 cars drive could cause accidents for him and other drivers.
But if hes proved what he can do in other forms of racing then why not give him a chance I say. Good luck to him

With the cash F1 cars cost I could not imagine that they would chance giving him a seat if they didn't think he was entirely up to the job.
As in most walks of life, some work hard to be good, others will be permanently useless, or mediocre and only get a seat because of the cash they bring `into' a team. but someone who is a natural, young, and with sharper reflexes than the average intake of young highly talented drivers could do well. Should be interesting to watch his performance.

Every single person on the planet, with very few exceptions have the same speed reflexes. Its a constant of the way you are built.
Every one except me, then. An item on a TV programme to test reflexes had Jenson Button as its guinea pig. I reckon his reflexes were four times as fast as mine. That'll be me in the tyre wall. And it's not an age thing, I've always had slow reactions.

Sorry, just need to get that off my chest.
Not sure what you mean by speed reflexes, I am talking about the way different people react to rapidly changing, sometimes instantly changing scenarios, and the intelligence of their response to a given situation. Some seem to be able to adapt instantly, where others regardless of age, gender, background etc take seconds longer to deal with a rapid change of situation, Sorry, just need to get that off my chest.
Fighter pilots would be a case in point, does anyone really believe the average joe off the street, would be able to deal with the complexity of flying a modern jet fighter, whilst at the same time making rapid tactical decisions? My guess would be, probably not.

I'm not having that Sorry, just need to get that off my chest.
My gran compared to me compared to 18 year old me? No comparison and I'm no F1 star. Even amongst similar age groups some people are just slow to react to things, maybe the physical reflexes are similar speeds but the mental side to reacting to them aren't the same.

I read/saw something that explained that the best drivers have very similar reflex speed to an average person. The difference in apparent reaction time is due to the expert driver detecting (for example) oversteer at a much earlier point in the breakaway than an average person.
Yes and anticipation, top drivers know when the slide will start because they either initiated or or allowed it, when it catches them out they spin same as a norm- although their practice can often save it from being terminal. With practice many people can greatly improve their apparent reaction time but its not the same as the underlying reflexes being measurably quicker.julian64 said:

Are you sure? I remember my grandfather showing me how you could 'train' reflexes to work faster, and watching things like speedway their reflexes are obviously ridiculously fast - but this could be down to the training aspect.Sorry, just need to get that off my chest.

looks like a 16 year old is set to be the youngest driver to compete in F1. He is currently driving in F3, should be interesting to see hew he get on.
The likes of Senna and Mansell did karting, Formula Ford, F3, F1; Gilles Villeneuve stood out in Formula Atlantic with minimal car experience. No data acquisition let alone telemetry which would have been the seat of your pants, no simulators, inferior diet and fitness regime, etc, etc...
