I have worked in F1 since in 87 and have been attending the races before then as a spectator so know all the engine notes well.

Just been to Silverstone GP and heard the engines for the first time this year at a GP. At first I did not like the sound but by the end of the race I must admit I got to like them. They sound decent accelerating out of the corners but you can talk to your family during the race, hear the commentary and you don't have a splitting headache at the end of the race. I for one prefer them.

Never really thought about it from that angle, but I see your point.

Still sounds crap on TV though.

I agree 100%. I've spent every other race with ear defenders on. This time my wife and I could discuss what was happening and it made for a much better day out.

Same experience at Barcelona this year, to begin with I missed the noise, by half-way through I wasn't even thinking about it, and by the end realised that being able to hear the commentary was a new and useful feature.
