Newey extends Red Bull contract, but steps away from F1 team
Adrian Newey has signed a new contract with Red Bull, but he will step away from his day-to-day involvement with the Formula 1 team to work on other projects.
Newey's future has been the subject of intense speculation over recent weeks, after Ferrari sounded him out about a future deal.
But with Newey eager to remain at Red Bull, he has now committed to a fresh multi-year contract that will keep him involved with the energy drinks company.
However, his responsibilities will change, and he will become an advisor and mentor to the F1 outfit rather than be totally focused on it.
A clarification on what Newey will focus on will be announced later this year.
Team principal Christian Horner said ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix that he was delighted his company was keeping hold of Newey.
"It is great that we have come to an agreement that will continue to advise and mentor the team going forward," he said. "There are some exciting new projects that will be announced in due course.
"He is still very much involved [with the F1 team]. We will have a further clarification later in the summer."
After helping turn Red Bull into a multiple title-winning team, Newey is known to have grown frustrated by the way that F1's ever-tighter regulations have limited his creativity.
Horner added: "I think Adrian has reached a stage where he is keen to take on some additional challenges as well. It is great news for the team and Red Bull that we have a multi-year agreement and it is exciting also for Adrian.
"He has always enjoyed the environment of Red Bull and he enjoys working with the people, so it was a pretty straightforward discussion in the end."
NO BLOW TO TEAM
Although Newey's future move away from his F1 role could be viewed as a blow to the team, Horner is adamant that the outfit will not suffer.
"We have tremendous strength in depth and it is not like he will not be about any more," he said.
"It is great for the team and for Red Bull and exciting for Adrian as well.
"You only have to look at him to see if he is fully committed or not. We are working very hard to close the gap down to Mercedes as that his priority."
I wonder how much this will affect Red Bull in the coming seasons, despite what they say.Adrian Newey has signed a new contract with Red Bull, but he will step away from his day-to-day involvement with the Formula 1 team to work on other projects.

I wonder if he wanted to leave because he is fed up with the regulations strangling technical innovation but they were scared as a free agent he would be offered a money no-object deal from another team so have created a new mega-bucks role to prevent him going anywhere else.
This is more or less how I read it. They offered him the contract just to keep him from going elsewhere. All this talk about mentoring (can they get any vaguer?) is to keep sponsors on board.I don't want to be a punctuation nazi, but Le Man's?

This. He has probably written his own cheque, and been given an enormous budget to pursue whatever takes his fancy. I'd suggest he might set up his own design studio, and i'd be willing to bet it would involve LeMans as he is clearly a fan of the discipline.I don't want to be a punctuation nazi, but Le Man's?
For those who missed Brundle's interview with Newey on the grid, or for those - if there are any - who believed Horner's spin, here are the important bits:
Brundle: You’re the breaking news, mate
Newey: Am I really? Oh, dear.
B: Are you happy?
N: Yes, yes I am. I’m looking forward to some different challenges. I’ve had a great time in F1 but it’s time to get involved in different things.
B: But they say you are still going to have an overview maybe on the architecture of the car, is that correct?
N: Er, slightly for next year, for next year’s car, then I’ll be involved in the initial layout and so forth then be working with the guys in the future in terms of just mentoring them and being an advisor really.
B: How long before you get bored and miss the adrenaline of this crazy business?
N: I don’t know, that’s a difficult one to answer. I’ve loved the career I’ve had but I feel I need some new challenges, some new stimulation I’ve always said I didn’t want to spend my entire career purely in motor racing and now it’s time to look at a few different things.
. . .
N: It’s been a fantastic experience.
The tense he used is indicative, I've loved I've had, I've always.
One of the greats.
Mind you, I bet those whose job it is to go for sponsors must have been groaning as they heard that interview.

Red Bull have a strong link to aviation projects as well, which would suit him also.
As said, endurance sports cars is another likely possibility.
Newey made exactly the same noises a little while before he left McLaren. And then joined Red Bull.
A 'multi year' contract, as Horner puts it, can be as little as two (has anyone seen reports of anything longer?
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a sugar coated way of saying gardening leave before he joins Ferrari for the 2016 season.

I'd put a small bet on Le Man's as well.Is it me or Neweys' voice really boring and monotone?

During the Sky coverage a 3 year deal was mentioned. I think it was either Horner when talking to Ted or possibly just Brundle saying it before the start of the race. Bob
