Change needed of Quali rules?
Discussion
With the grid being compromised by flag situations in 2 of the 6 Races this season is it time for a rule change?
Funny enough Nicos lack of talent may well have helped Lewis in China as Daniel was on a very quick lap only to find a merc parked on the main straight.
At the moment its far to easy for a driver who has set a fair time to go all out for a Banzai lap knowing he is on a win win situation if spins.
So maybe if the drivers that affected by the same situations in future could have another run?

Personally, I'd prefer to leave it as it is.
If we had to have a change, I would like to see a reverse (10- 1) Q2 shoot out with drivers starting at say 1 min intervals on flag-free track. I think this sort of approach could build the tension to fever pitch and each team / driver gets an equal amount of camera time.
It is only a thought.

At which point they've burnt out their fresh tyres, or need to pit for more fuel to do another run..I think it's pretty clear now; if you save your run to later in the session then there's an increasing risk that something out of your control will stop you from getting a clean lap in, be it weather, your mistake, other drivers or mechanical failure. We see this effect in Q1/Q2 far more often than Q3 when there are more cars on track and the risk of missing a lap means you're out of qualifying rather than just somewhere in the middle of the top 10.

I was thinking about that possible solution rdjohn - I think they do similar in WSB.
The only issue would be with variable weather conditions or a track that's improving drastically with each lap run. Maybe having that method for Monaco would be good and also Valencia though.
If the reverse order was pre-determined then it also has the slight benefit of shuffling the pack for the race in the event of variable conditions. At least everyone knows when they need to be on it. Toto's idea also has merit, but we did get a better race on Sunday by the fact Lewis was behind, rather than 20s down the road. The only issue would be with variable weather conditions or a track that's improving drastically with each lap run. Again, all helping to liven up the show a bit.
F1 had a one-at-a-time shootout for qualifying before but it was scrapped for the current format, largely I think because it was a bit dull having only one car on track at any time. Certainly I find the last minute scramble of Q3 far more exciting to watch.
Anyway, since when has F1 been about fairness? So one driver gets disadvantaged by a flag on his quick lap, but that's really no different or more likely than that same driver getting caught out by changing track conditions in a shootout. It's all just part of the game. If the drivers want to cry about it then they should try a differnt career.

keep as it is but add a 4th stage where the top 5 go onto a pole lap shootout. However the pole lap shootout is counted as a seperate championship for driver and team. points go 10,6,4,2,1. You get 1 out lap, 1 hot lap, and 1 in lap.
Hotlap qualifiers receive 1 set of tyres that have to be given back.
This allows someone to prove they were fastest over 1 lap and stops teams that make it through to q3 just sandbagging for 10th without tyres.

Notice now Toto Wolff is now saying that he would like to see quali exstended if a simular situation occurs,Perhaps he thinks Nico is going for his hat trick!
One thing for certain all the drivers will making sure they get out on track before the No6 Mercedes in Canada.
lewis is a master round canada, he will walk that quali and race. One thing for certain all the drivers will making sure they get out on track before the No6 Mercedes in Canada.

3 place grid penalty for any car causing a yellow or red flag during the final 3 mins of a qualifying session.
That would be my option, plus appears to be the favoured solution from some in F1 too - http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2014/05/changes-need...

Would be great, but would need consistent weather conditions for everyone I guess. I like it, although why only for the last 3 mins?Yellow flag = 3 place penalty, Red flag = 10 place
I would have thought it would be more beneficial to not have yellow flags, if there is an incident, it's red flagged, everyone goes back to the pits, fuel, tyre warmers, the qualifying clock is stopped and has x minutes added on to cover the out lap.
