In testing confused

1:26.464s lap during the closing minutes of the session.

Not only was there surprise at the Marussia driver's presence in P1 - not least from the team themselves - but the time was also over three seconds faster than the Briton managed in qualifying last Saturday and would have put him fourth on the grid for the race.

What the hells he playing at then?

Must admit, I was also pretty shocked to see this!

Assume it's down to tyres, fuel load, temperature and the track potentially having rubbered in a bit since Saturday.

Also helped by a start/stop session, and might have just been on the track at the right time.

Still, impressive for a driver whose credibility is so often questioned. Good on him smile

Have to admit I had to look at the headline more than once! Max must have straight lined the chicane when the marshalls were not looking hehe

The Briton leapt to the top of the times with a late run on Pirelli's supersoft tyre that put him just over two tenths clear of Charles Pic's twin-tusk Lotus, which set its best time on the soft tyre.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton led the way for most of the day, which began wet on the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya.

The Mercedes driver, who took his fourth straight win of the season at the Spanish GP on Sunday, wound up third fastest, only 0.013s slower than Pic on a set of mediums

We also don't know anything about their relative fuel loads.

Blatantly a glory run. Quali simulation is usually done within the last hour.

Pic in Lotus set similar lap time to Max but om softs.

Or engine settings, fuel metering etc.

One thing you can be sure of, Max hasn't got fast all of a sudden.

I know it rained early on, was it just the only time set on a dry track? hehe

Just for reference that time would have put him 4th on the grid if set on Saturday.

Really!?

Even with different track conditions that's fking impressive! Where's that pace come from? Suppose they could be running.under weight/extra power for some reason.

To be fair though he still had to actually do the time, so that is good.

It should set him up well for the next few rounds, as he should now be able to find some time in the car and within himself..

I don't see how? This doesn't mark some kind of Marussia lap time breakthrough- I suspect if everybody did a qualifying sim on the super sorts the running order would be business as usual i.e. Chilton struggling to keep Marcus Ericsson behind him.

If more or less every other driver crashes out of the race as they did in Panis' year then yes we could wink

If he's been able to go quicker in the car than ever before he should at least find the next time he's in the car slower and therefore have more time to do things - it's acclimatisation. imho
