Likely to buy up Caterham/Marussia/Force India? All are known to have money issues and starting a team from scratch in America would be an impossible job.
Really? A lot of the NASCAR teams in Charlotte (HMS, RCR, JGR, SHR et al) have some *serious* engineering talent behind them, not to mention some facilities that'd embarrass a mid-size F1 team!Gaz. said:
One thing I don't understand is how can they win constructor points if they are using a Dallara chassis? Surely as a constructor you have to make a certain amount of the car?
Didn't HRT use Dallara? I'd not seen anything that Haas were going to - as someone else has said, already have an engineering centre in Europe. The vaguely interesting question will be: which engine will they use? The 'spare' Mercedes engine once McLaren move on? Or maybe a second string Honda team?
I think that he bought shares in Multimatic Engineering and just a quick use of google shows that those two companies have Lolas old base plus Multimatics bases in Coventry and Norwich (I think?).

ETA: I think that you are allowed to get a third party to work for you as a sub-contractor either with design work or manufacturing components.

Really? You need today around 250 employees, some of them wanting £200,000 a year plus. An engine deal, massive transportation costs, trucks, a facility, wind tunnel, and a whole load of manufacturing technology and autoclaves. The only way to get into F1 today is to buy a team. Not even Toyota would try to start from scratch in F1. Haas has no F1 experience, he has no disposable income to the levels of Red Bull and he will struggle to get sponsorship from the US when all of the big F1 teams are already pitching to global USA which today is busy looking inwards not outwards.
A great story but i am not sure it is going to get much interest in the USA.

How different are the costs (inflation adjusted) from the days when Jackie/Paul Stewart started Stewart GP from scratch? IIRC, Jackie planned on five years before they'd see the podium, but they managed a win and pole in their third season and finished fourth in the constructors championship. And made a profit every year! Their budget was about £25M at the start, don't know what it was by 99... actually that seems a really long time ago now.

While there is a lot of talent in the Charlotte area, its not F1 talent. The supplier base is geared to Nascar, and F1 requirements are different. USF1 struggled because of location before their demise. I don't see why you'd make a difficult task into a near impossible one by setting up there.
USF1 struggled because they didn't have the money or a clue what they were doing.Haas is not stupid, Automation make sales in excess of $1 billion a year, he's run a NASCAR team for 12/13 years. He also owns one of the best wind tunnels in the world which is already in use by NASCAR, Indy and F1 teams.
My guess is the car would be designed & built in the US and operated from Europe. I wouldn't be surprised if he delays entry until 2016 though.
I wonder if he will be chasing the Merc engine deal spot when McLaren depart for Honda.
