It occurred to me today, that I am missing another high pitched screaming sound during races - Murray Walker!

I wonder what he thinks of the new cars and 2014?

Legend. Do you miss him?

Miss James Hunt more. What would their commentary add to the races now?

I gave the Beeb a go this weekend.

DC is mega.
Ben Edwards made me want to eat my ears.

Whooo knows if he is operating under guidance from the producer and I'm also trying not to fall on a band-wagon here - but his commentary did seem fairly dumbed-down & simply telling me what I can see for myself, no insight, no additional information. I wouldn't consider him a Legard though.

Murray may have done much the same but at least he had stats & information that he thrown into the mix.

Crofty & Brundle work really well together and are a partnership that I enjoy listening to.

Murray is a legend, but I don't miss him

Crofts and Brundle are really good and, finally, a suitable replacement for Walker

Utmost respect to Murray, but he wasn't irreplaceable.

I dislike how DC seems to get talked over or in a situation where he can't get a word in edge ways because the other guy keeps chatting ste.

Brundle and Crofty have the edge, but sometimes its the same story there as well.

Another thing I thought about though... is Murray the last commentator to do the job on his own? Im sure it used to be just Murray, then as he got closer to retirement they brought in a second to keep him corrected!

I thought Legard did it on his own? Something to do with leaving his colleagues speechless?

Yes and no, towards the end of his career he was pretty woefull, i never minded James Allen TBH but he did get so excited he made the odd cockup.
I'm pretty sure Murry had a co commentator with him since the 70, maybe earlyer?

I didn't mind James Allen. I liked his enthusiasm.

Coulthard was rubbish this weekend - usually like him but there were too many lame, unfunny witticisms and he completely failed to appreciate why drivers were not using their DRS in the first zone.

What was the reason?

Maybe so the person they had just overtaken didn't get DRS at the 2nd detection point and re-pass them down the start/finish straight? Not sure but that was my logic on the matter.

Ben Edwards has been annoying me since he started commentating. Over-excited, cock ups aplenty, shouts over the top of more interesting Coulthard...

Walker INITIALLY commentated on the F1 races on his own.

BBC started covering the whole season with a combination of highlights programmes on Sunday night and a handful of live races.
These programmes started in 1978 and for that year and 1979 Walker commentated solo. Hunt was introduced into the commentary box for the 1980 season - much to Walker's anger and annoyance as he -

a) didn't care much for Hunt

b) thought that the BBC were perhaps easing him out of the job

Of course, as the years went on, the relationship between Walker and Hunt developed into a genuine friendship and they became a very good team.

No. Couldn't stand his commentating.

Errors all the time which did not make him quirky, it made him annoying.

Agreed, but he has a dyed-in-the-wool love of the sport, and a real passion for it. I'd rather have him, errors and all, than even ten seconds of Suzi Perry. She's be out of her depth in a paddling pool.

Yes, almost immature schoolboy type which I find annoying. He has not improved either, quite the opposite. Next time he's commentating and say Alonso makes some move, he goes OTT overboard and commentates on the hype rather that the action.

Someone in the organisation really should mark his card.

There again, just maybe that style of commentary excitement overkill will prove attractive to and retain a younger audience. I'm a long time away from being a younger audience.

I liked the genuine enthusiasm of Murray Walker and because of that could forgive his various 'foibles'. His foot in mouth cock ups were enjoyable rather than annoying. His father Graham had a better commentating style for me. Very authoritative. Both father and son Walkers competed in Motor Cycle competitions so knew something about what they were talking about. Not all commentators can be accused of that and it often shows.

Waiting for our plane at the airport when travelling back from a Grand Prix in Mainland Europe, there were a few drivers and Murray Walker waiting there too. My close friend who had a dislike of Walker's commentary style got talking to him about it. It went right over his head... smile ... Whilst he may have annoyed more knowing F1 enthusiasts, he was possibly widely and hugely liked by less enthusiastic viewers of our favourite sport.

There's nowt so queer as folk ... biggrin

Murray was great, but his occasional endearing muddles became a little too regular towards the end of his tenure.

Murray retired 13 years ago(yes, really...), so I think we have all had time to get used to his absence by now!

Apparently the great man was in poor health last summer, does any one know how he's doing now?

He was on Desert Island Discs a week or so ago. Seemed in good health and spirits.

Guess what his first record choice was. ... smile

I miss Brundle and Coulthard together and Jake for that matter - that short era really was the peak in terms of presenting for me.

I'll always have a place in my heart for Murray Walker, it'll be a sad day when he passes on, yes he made mistakes, yes he used to get all excited and say silly things, okay it might not have made him the best news reporter - but it added to the fun of the event for sport.
